2012 Induction Press Release
A Eugene native and graduate of Crow High School, Sand was a three-year letter winner for Northwest Christian and three-time All-American from 1988 to 1991. Sand led the Crusaders to the NBCAA National Championship as a junior and as a junior and senior guided his teams to back-to-back third-place finishes at the event.
Sand averaged 23.6 points per game during his career, a record which he still holds to this day. Sand ranks fourth all-time in scoring and is one of five players on record to have crossed the 1,000 point plateau in his career. His name can be found seven times in the list of the top-15 single-game scoring performances ever, including 44 points against Manhattan Christian on March 10, 1990 which stood as the single-game record until 2018. He also held the single-game record of 22 rebounds for 26 years and claims records for field goals made and attempted, and field goal percentage in a game.
Along with his triple All-American honors, Sand had a highly decorated career. As a sophomore he earned Tournament MVP Honors at the NBCAA National Championship Tournament, the Columbia Christian College Tournament and the LBCC Roadrunner Invitational and was an All-Tournament selection at the SWOCC Tournament and the NAIA Tip-Off Tournament.
During his junior season Sand again earned MVP honors at the Columbia Christian Tournament and added MVP honors at the SWOCC Tournament as well. He earned MVP honors during his senior season at the LCC Tournament and made the All-Tourney teams at Columbia Christian and Western Oregon.
Sand went on to play one year in Germany and had opportunities to continue his professional career in Australia before the Lord led him back to the Pacific Northwest. He currently owns businesses in Salem and Eugene in the repair industry and lives in Baker City with his wife Sherri, a published author, and their four children.
