BLUE RIVER, Ore. – The Bushnell University men's golf team made a statement in their first tournament of the season, as two squads of Beacons finished first and second in the standings of their dual match with Corban University, concluding at Tokatee Golf Course on Saturday.
 
The Beacon "A" team won the event, shooting a 295-296—591 to tie for the second-best two-round tournament score in school history. Showing the depth of their roster, the Beacons had a "B" team which took second place, shooting 299-306—605.

First-Year Head Coach Nathan Weidenmann said, "I am super proud of our team today. It feels great to get a tournament win in our first competition of the season. Great performance by Luke Fenner in earning medalist honors. He prevailed under some difficult course conditions. I thought we got off to a bit of a slow start today. It was windy at times which made attacking the course challenging. That said our athletes stayed engaged and were able to deliver over the course of the round. 
 
Corban also fielded a pair of teams, taking third (302-311—613) and fourth (322-319—641) respectively. "Corban is a great program and fierce competitors," said Wiedenmann. "I have high praise for their athletes and coaching staff."
 
Senior transfer Luke Fenner (pictured) had an impressive debut in a Beacon polo, winning the tournament by one stroke as he shot a two-day score of 73-74—147 to finish three-over par.
 
Bushnell collected six of the top-seven individual places as senior Jacob Holmes (75-73—148) and freshman Lincoln Wiedenmann (76-72—148) tied for second-place. Wiedenmann had the low round of the day on Saturday in his first collegiate tournament. 
 
Breaking up the Bushnell sweep at the top of the card was Corban's David Harvey, shooting a 75-73—148 to join the second-place group at four-over par.
 
Shawn Petty (75-74—149) rounded out the top-five and was followed by Peyton Wiedenmann (71-79—150) and Cody Adams (74-76—150) in a sixth-place tie.
 
UP NEXT: The Beacons will jump right into their first Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament of the season, next Monday and Tuesday, September 7-8, as they compete at the Oregon Tech Invitational at Running Y Golf Resort in Klamath Falls. Coach Wiedenmann said, "I am excited about our first conference tournament next week. This team is just discovering their identity and potential on the course. It is going to be a great season."
