EUGENE, Ore. – The emergence of a pair of freshman jumpers, along with the continued growth of a senior distance runner, highlighted the 2024 Track & Field seasons for the Beacons.
Â
KAITLIN COOK
Â
Kaitlin Cook continued to add to her growing legacy this spring as she earned an NAIA qualification in the 3000-meter Steeplechase. She set a new personal record on May 3 at the Oregon Twilight, fueled by the mystique of Hayward Field. Her 11:22.58 hit the NAIA "B" Standard and set the tone for a strong finish to the season. Cook took fourth place at the CCC Championships and went on to snag 19th at the NAIA National meet.
Â
Cook will close out her career this fall, competing in her final cross country season.
Â
KALEO WELLMAN
Â
Freshman
Kaleo Wellman set a pair of school records in her debut campaign, earning new standards in both the Indoor and Outdoor Long Jump events. His outdoor school record of 7.23m (23'8.75") came at the Oregon State High Performance Meet on April 26 and broke a nine-year old school record. He hit the "A" standard and earned himself his first trip to the NAIA National Championship.
Â
Wellman went on to earn All-Cascade Collegiate Conference honors, taking second place at the CCC Championship.
Â
JERMAINE SCHEXNAYDER
Â
Freshman
Jermaine Schexnayder had a remarkable first season with the Beacon track and field team and collected a total of four new school records.
Â
During the indoor season, Schexnayder claimed new school records in the high jump and triple jump. He earned a "B" standard in the triple jump and became the first Beacon ever to compete at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
Â
In the outdoor season he repeated the same feat by claiming school records in both the High Jump and Triple Jump once again. At the CCC Championships, Schexnayder brought home a pair of All-CCC finishes as he took third-place in the high jump before claiming the Conference Championship in the Triple Jump. Â
Â
He qualified for the NAIA Outdoor National Championship, where he ended the season on a high note, claiming another school record as he jumped 14.98m (49"1.75") to grab a top-ten finish.
