Bushnell Esports: Weekly Recap

EUGENE, Ore. – Bushnell University continues the National Association of Collegiate Esports Starleague spring competition this week with three teams in action.

Overwatch kicks off the week on Monday night, Rocket League plays on Thursday evening and Fortnite will defend their title on Sunday afternoon.

LEAGUE OF LEGENDS
League operates in a Swiss-style format, meaning opponents will be determined after each round of play with teams competing against another team with the same number of regular-season wins. Each match is a best-of-three games. At the end of the regular season, the top-eight teams from each conference will move on to the conference playoffs. The Beacons compete in the West Conference, which consists of 56 teams.

UC San Diego 2, Bushnell 0
Bushnell fell to the University of California San Diego on Tuesday to wrap up the six-game regular season. The Beacons continued with their starting lineup of Justin "Malstixy" Ault, Colton "sac de lait" Osten-Milbert, Drew "Zubdew" Lindley, Tyler "ShockMaster" Chase and Chad "RUBŸ" Vernon.

With the loss, the Beacons now sit in a 15-way tie for the remaining three postseason spots and will need to rely on a tiebreaker going in their favor to advance. The tiebreaker is broken by (1) strength of schedule, (2) strength of opponent's schedule and (3) round-based weight of losses. The results of the tiebreaker are expected to be announced on Tuesday, March 8.

ROCKET LEAGUE
The Rocket League regular season consists of nine rounds of conference play. All matches are a best-of-five games. There are 17 conferences separated by region, each consisting of 9 or 10 teams. The Beacons compete in the West 2 Conference. The top-three teams from each conference qualify for the postseason which begins with a Conference Play-In (2nd vs 3rd) followed by the Conference Championship (1st vs Play-In Winner).

University of Manitoba 3, Bushnell 0 (4-1, 1-0 OT, 5-3)
Bushnell fell to the University of Manitoba (4-2) on Monday. Preston "PrestoMagic" Clark, Lucas Fenton and Kyle "Fossphine" Foss made up the starting lineup. Clark finished with a season-high four goals to lead the offense. Fenton recorded two assists and seven saves. Foss picked up his first assist of the season in addition to his five saves.

Up next, Bushnell takes on Loyola Marymount University (4-1) on Thursday, March 10 at 5 p.m.

FORTNITE
The Fortnite circuit consists of three Regional Opens for each region (East/West) followed by the Collegiate Championship for qualifying teams. The top four teams from each Regional Open, based on earned points, will receive direct bids to the Collegiate Championship on March 19. There will be an additional 24 bids assigned based on a team's collective points earned throughout all Regional Opens. In total, 48 teams will qualify for the Collegiate Championship, with 24 teams coming from the East Region and 24 teams coming from the West Region.

West Regional Open #2: First Place
Christian Velazquez and David Sollid cruised to a first-place finish in the Fortnite West Open #2 on Saturday afternoon, grabbing Victory Royales in three of four matches. The duo had already earned an automatic bid to the Collegiate Championship after finishing second in the West Open #1 but have chosen to compete in the remaining qualifiers to get experience against their collegiate competition.

Velazquez and Sollid finished with 117 points (95 placement points and 22 eliminations), the highest point total of any team so far in qualifying from either region. It turned out to be a dominant performance for the Beacons as their 117 points were 34 points higher than the second-place finisher.

The West Regional Open #3 is scheduled for March 13th at noon. The Collegiate Championship will be held on March 19th at 11 a.m.
