Bushnell Esports: Weekly Recap

EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell Esports Overwatch and Rocket League teams continued their NACE Starleague 2021-22 West Region matches this week.  

The Overwatch team split their matches, falling 3-0 to Colorado College on Monday before rebounding with a 3-0 win over Southern Methodist University on Thursday. The Beacons will have next week off before returning to action on Monday, Sept. 27 to face Grand Canyon University.

The Rocket League squad fell to 0-2 on the season after falling to York College (Neb.) on Tuesday. The Beacons will look to get in the win column on Monday (Sept. 20) as they take on Irvine Valley College at 7 p.m.

OVERWATCH

Colorado College 3, Bushnell 0
The CC Tigers took the first round of Control on Lijiang Tower, but the Beacons secured the second in the best-of-three opening map. The Tigers won map one with a victory in the decisive third round.

Colorado College was able to stop the Beacons on its defensive turn of Hybrid on King's Row to go up 2-0 on the match.

Both sides managed to escort the payload in their attacking rounds of map three, Route 66. The Tigers closed out the match with more progress in the closing round to secure to 3-0 victory.

Bushnell 3, SMU 0
Bushnell bounced back from Monday's loss with a sweep of Southern Methodist University on Thursday evening. Aaron "MLG" May was named the Player of the Match.

The Beacons took two of three rounds of Control on Lijiang Tower to get out to a 1-0 lead on the match.

SMU failed to capture the objective on its offensive turn of Hybrid, giving the Beacons an opportunity to secure the point on map two. The Beacons secured the capture point with over a minute remaining to enter the third map with a 2-0 advantage.

The Beacons held SMU to before the first checkpoint to set up a quick victory on map three.  

ROCKET LEAGUE

York College (Neb.) 3, Bushnell 1 (2-3, 1-4, 3-2, 4-7)
Bushnell fell 3-1 in Tuesday's match against the York College Panthers. Preston "PrestoMagic" Clark led the Beacons with four goals and four assists on the match. Benny "Bemohz" Flores Jr. also added four goals on the match, while Dakota "DakKura" Kurahara finished with two goals and three assists for the Beacons.

The Beacons led 2-1 for most of the opening game thanks to goals from Flores Jr. and Kurahara. Clark assisted on both scores. The Panthers tied it up with 30 seconds to go, before knocking in the game-winner three seconds into overtime on an unfortunate deflection for the Beacons on the kickoff.

The Panthers went on to win the second game 4-1, with Clark scoring the lone goal for the Beacons.

Flores Jr. found the net once again to give the Beacons an early lead in the must-win third game. The Panthers quickly tied it up, later taking a 2-1 advantage with two minutes to go. Clark scored the next two goals for the Beacons, with a critical demo from Flores Jr. to give the Beacons a 3-2 win and send the match to a fourth game.

Flores Jr. continued to find early goals, scoring 10 seconds into the fourth game. The Panthers scored four unanswered to put away the match. The Beacons did manage to get back within two but did not have enough time to pull off the comeback, falling 7-4 in the closing game.
