EUGENE, Ore. – Bushnell University will be represented by 23 athletes this weekend as they compete at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships presented by US Bank, which are being hosted by Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
On the men's side, a number of Beacons will look for a chance to claim top-three finishes, earning All-Cascade Conference honors.
Logan Oakerman leads the way as he heads into the championship ranked No. 1 in the CCC in the Discus. It was been quite a season for the senior, who came into the year holding the school record at 42.69 meters. By the end of the regular season, he moved the needle substantially, posting a 47.71 at the Oregon Twilight. This gave him an NAIA "B" qualification, and an improvement of 16.5 feet.
Oakerman will also compete in the Shot Put where he holds the school record at 14.43 meters and is ranked No. 6. He will be joined by freshman
Luke King.
Sophomore
Jaron Carter has potential to see multiple all-conference nods and hopes to become the first sprinter in school history to win a CCC title as he competes in both the 100m and 200m events, along with the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the 100m and No. 4 in the 200m while the 4x100 team is seeded third.
Other potential standout performances could be in the offing from senior
Shawn Johnson in the 400m, where he is ranked third, or from
Prince Harris in the triple jump, also ranked No. 3.
The women's side features a number of All-CCC candidates as well, led by freshman
Mayah Pappas, who is seeded third in the long jump. In the pole vault, both current and former school record holders
Carina Haas and
Rachel Rhoads are expected to compete for a top slot as they come in ranked fifth and sixth in the event respectively.
Shay Coons, who recently hit the NAIA "B" standard in the javelin cannot be counted out as she is still coming into her own after joining the team late at the conclusion of the Bushnell volleyball season. The sophomore is currently seeded seventh.
The championships open up for the Beacons on Friday at 4:00 pm with the men's long jump, women's long jump, and women's high jump starting simultaneously. Up-to-the-minute results will be available during the event at
