Velazquez and Sollid Place 7th in Fortnite Fall Cup

EUGENE, Ore. – Christian "Pekzyyy" Velazquez and David Sollid placed seventh in the Fortnite Fall Cup on Saturday, one of the National Association of Collegiate Esports Starleague tournament circuits.

The format of the Fall Cup was a Duos tournament in which 31 teams competed. The pairs played a total of six matches in custom lobbies. Teams earned points based on their performance in each of the six matches. Points were distributed based on placement in each round with an additional point being awarded for each elimination. The East and West pools of registered teams competed in one server.

Velazquez and Sollid couldn't have gotten off to a much better start, grabbing the Victory Royale in the first match along with eight eliminations to earn 33 points. That round would end up accounting for nearly half their tournament total (68 points). Velazquez led the field with six eliminations, pulling off the win after losing Sollid late in the match.

The Beacons had an early exit in match two to drop down a few spots in the standings. They bounced back with a pair of fourth place finishes in third and fourth rounds to maintain their positioning near the top of the leaderboard. Velazquez recorded two eliminations in each round as the pair secured 16 points in each.

The final points for the Beacons would come in the fifth match as they had another early exit but picked up a placement point and two more elimination points.

Johns Hopkins University won the tournament with 152 points. Ashland University, who had three teams entered, placed second (142) and third (125).

The tournament wasn't without controversy as following match two, the format was changed so four matches would be played on the East server and two on the West server. CSL Esports, the operators of NACE Starleague announced, "Effective immediately, and to ensure that we have the most competitive and fair experience possible for all participants, we will be updating the server split to four East matches and two West matches."

Playing on a different server affects a game like Fortnite because of the fast-paced format. There is a lag, or delay between the player action and server reaction, when playing on a server that is different than your region. As one of four teams on the West, this made the Beacons' win in match one even more important as this Victory Royale was on the East Server.

The Fall Cup II is scheduled for December 11.
