Bushnell Esports: Weekly Recap

EUGENE, Ore. – Bushnell Esports fell in a close match with Westcliff University in Rocket League on Monday evening before defeating Peou Gaming out of the University of Hawai'i, West O'ahu in League of Legends action on Tuesday night.

The National Association of Collegiate Esports Starleague continues next week with matches in Rocket League, Overwatch and League of Legends. The NACE Starleague Fortnite Fall Cup also kicks off this weekend as the Beacons compete in the West Regional Qualifier on Saturday at noon.

OVERWATCH
The Overwatch regular season consists of nine rounds of conference play. All matches are a best-of-five games. The top-three teams from each conference will move on to the postseason which begins with a Conference Play-In (2nd vs 3rd) followed by the Conference Championship (1st vs Play-In Winner).

The Overwatch team had a bye this week, which ended up counting as a win in the conference standings. However, with just two matches to go, the Beacons are out of contention for a top-three spot. Bushnell (3-4) takes on San Diego State (3-4) next week in their eighth-round match. The Aztecs have defeated Colorado College and Southern Methodist University this season. The Beacons fell to Colorado College in round two before defeating SMU in round three.

ROCKET LEAGUE
The Rocket League regular season consists of nine rounds of conference play. All matches are a best-of-five games. The top-three teams from each conference will move on to the postseason which begins with a Conference Play-In (2nd vs 3rd) followed by the Conference Championship (1st vs Play-In Winner).

Westcliff 3, Bushnell 1 (1-2, 0-4, 2-0, 1-2)
Victor "SpeshalNed" Hesser had a strong season-debut for the Beacons (1-7) in their loss to Westcliff University on Monday. Hesser led Bushnell with three goals and seven saves in his first match.

The Beacons held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal in game one but the Warriors managed to secure the victory, sending in the match-winner with just over 90 seconds to play. Westcliff cruised to a second game victory, outshooting Bushnell 13-3. Hesser scored two goals and Preston "PrestoMagic" Clark made three saves in the third game to keep the Beacons in the match.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth game, Clark tied the match at 1-1 with just under 90 seconds remaining. The Warriors took the 2-1 lead with 26 seconds to go and the Beacons were unable to pull off the comeback.

Hesser's debut highlighted the night for Bushnell, who will enter their eighth-round match next Monday (Oct. 25) against California State University San Marcos (4-3).  

LEAGUE OF LEGENDS
League operates in a Swiss-style format, meaning opponents will be determined after each round of play with teams competing against another team with the same number of regular-season wins. Each match is a best-of-three games. At the end of the regular season, the top-eight teams from each conference will move on to the conference playoffs.

Bushnell 2, University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu 0 (22-11, 30-17)
The Beacons (2-3) opened the League of Legends season with a win over Colorado State (Sept. 21) before falling in their next three matches. Bushnell had a solid showing against Pueo Gaming out of the University of Hawai'i, West O'ahu on Tuesday night, taking the series in two. The winning lineup consisted of Chad "RUBŸ" Vernon, Justin "Malstixy" Ault, Colton "sac de lait" Osten-Milbert, Drew "Zubdew" Lindley, and Tyler "ShockMaster" Chase (pictured).

FORTNITE
The NACE Starleague Fall Cup featuring Fortnite takes place on Saturday (Oct. 23) at 11 a.m. It will be a Duos tournament where each team will be invited into custom lobbies, playing a total of six matches. Each team will earn points based on their performance in each of the six matches. The Top-24 teams from each region will qualify for the Playoffs, which take place on Sunday (Oct. 24).

Returning for the Beacons is sophomore Christian "Pekzyyy" Velazquez, who was named a member of the All-NACE Fortnite team in July. Velazquez led the Beacons to a fifth-place finish in their inaugural Fortnite season last year. He is joined by first-year player David Sollid.
