Weekend of Surprises at CCC Championship

Hermiston, Ore. – NCU was expected to pick up an individual event title at the CCC Championships this weekend, with the NAIA's national leader in the Javelin competing. A second title was also added, bolstering a weekend of breakout performances by multiple Beacons.

Yes, Bailey Dell (pictured) once again won the CCC Javelin championship, her third in three years. Add in her Big East Championship at DePaul as a freshman and the senior has won every conference championship she has entered. That much wasn't a shock and neither was the fact that she won the title by nearly 27 feet.

Dell went ahead and did herself one better, setting a new lifetime PR with a heave of 49.63 meters. That mark not only breaks her own NCU record but it also cemented her as both the CCC Championship record hold and the Cascade Conference all-time record holder to boot.

While Dell was going for her record, sophomore Hannah Eddens was also hard at work in the Triple Jump pit where she also set a school record. On her first run of the finals, Eddens launched 10.94 meters, which was good for her first ever CCC Championship. Coming into the event as the No. 8 seed, she was expected to possibly squeak out one point for the Beacons. Instead, she scored ten.

The surprises didn't stop there.  Junior transfer Megan Van Marter was seeded fourth in the high jump. Working her way through the bar advancements, Van Marter easily nailed her school record of 1.55m. Then, on her third attempt at 1.60m she cleared the stick for a new school record, a second-place finish, and All-Conference honors.

Also making a leap past her seeding was junior Myah Harter. The No. 5 ranked Discus thrower during the regular season, Harter hit a 38.70m toss on her final throw to cement third-place and All-Conference honors.

Junior Cass Brownell joined the higher-finish club. Already a fifth-place finisher in the 3000m Steeplechase on Friday night, Brownell claimed her first All-CCC finish as she took third in the 800m, narrowly missing an NCU school record by .58 seconds. Brownell was seeded sixth.

Also seeded sixth but taking third place was sophomore Abigail Spencer, landing a 5.35m Long Jump for anew personal record and her first All-Conference nod.

NCU's other top threats to claim top-three finishes for All-conference honors, sophomores Anika Rasubala and Christy Seaton, did not disappoint. On Friday, Rasubala took third in the Steeplechase and then on Saturday, Seaton came across the 100m Hurdle finish line in second.

The Beacons finished the championship with 84 points, good for a sixth-place finish. The College of Idaho won the championship with 196.5 points, followed by Southern Oregon (171.5) and Corban (132.5).
