COMPLETE DAY ONE RESULTS |
NCU CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
GULF SHORES, Ala. - Day One at the NAIA Track & Field National Championships proved to be a good one for the Beacons. Three athletes were awarded All-American plaudits, including the first ever selection on the men's team.
CCC javelin champion
Bailey Dell broke her own school record once again, throwing 47.15m to claim third-place and give the Beacon women their first six points of the 2016 championships.
In the men's javelin, sophomore
Christian Hackney uncorked four straight improvements on his own season best and finished with a new NCU school record as well, landing a 59.69 to take sixth place. Hackney was seeded 16th in the event and had only finished fifth in the Cascade Conference championships two weeks ago. This time around he surpassed all but one other CCC competitor and scored NCU's first ever NAIA championship points.
The final race of the night for the Beacons was the 10000m and it gave the Beacons another All-American finish as Rosa Schnmidt landed in sixth place. The sophomore finished just outside of the point race last season, improving three spots.
Thursday also featured the preliminary rounds for both the women's 1500m and 3000m Steeplchase events and NCU produced finals qualifiers in both events.
In the 1500m,
Sierra Brown took fifth in her heat and claimed the final spot in Saturday's championship round. Both
Michelle Fletcher and
Macie Gale qualified for the finals in the Steeplechase.
Also competing on Thursday and finishing up their seasons were
Madeleine Nelson,
Shaneesa Applegate, and
Garth Gant. Nelson took 13th in the javelin, Applegate was 18th in the long jump and Gant closed out his career with a 55.66m to take 13th place in the men's javelin.
With nine points, the NCU women's team opened the competition in eighth place and just one point out of third. With three points provided by Hackney, the NCU men are assured they will place in the event for the first time. They are currently 14th.
Friday will be a short day for NCU on the track as the only competitor will be sophomore
Garrett Kraal, running in the preliminary round of the 5000m.
