PORTLAND, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's golf team hung onto their day-one lead but Concordia University crept in for a tie as the two schools earned Co-Champion honors at the Warner Pacific Invitational. It was the third team championship in a Cascade Collegiate Conference event for the Beacons.
Holding a one-shot lead on the field after the first two rounds, NCU shot their best round of the event on Tuesday with a 299, but Concordia was one stroke better at 298. Both teams finished with a 903, giving them a 14-stroke lead over third-place Warner Pacific. Corban took fourth place, followed by Willamette University in fifth.
Tyler Falk shot a 76 on Tuesday to finish the event at one-under par, good enough to take third place. A.J. Nelson from Warner Pacific claimed his first tournament medal, shooting a 70-73-71=214. Concordia's Jesse Heinly was second at 217 while Falk finished at 218. Jared Lambert from Concordia claimed fourth place and NCU's Sam Mar claimed part of a fifth-place tie (72-77-73=222).
James Demopoulos (pictured) finished in 18th place (79-76-77=232) while Cody Gardner ended the event in 22nd (85-77-73=235). For Gardner it was the best three-round score of his career, topping a 293 from this same event last season. Senior Calvin Green was in 30th place (81-79-78=238).
The Beacons take some momentum into the winter break. The fall golf season has concluded with action picking up again on March 17, 2014 at the Corban Invitational in Salem.
