Seventh-Ranked Yotes Sweep Away Beacons

EUGENE, Ore.  – The College of Idaho, ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA national coaches' poll, took out the Beacons in three sets on Saturday night, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18. The Yotes posted 11 blocks while holding NCU to just a .043 hitting percentage on the night. It was the 59th straight home CCC victory for C of I.

Head Coach Mike Gaffaney said, “This was just one of those weekends where we lacked the offense that we needed as a whole. C of I always plays well at home. The good thing is that this really helped us identify some things we need to improve in practice this week to prepare us for a good weekend and home next Friday and Saturday.”

The Beacons (9-10, 4-7 CCC) stayed close early in Set 1, trailing just 11-8 after an Emily Miller (pictured) spike.  However, a trio of Kylee Nawahine kills fueled a 7-2 spurt to give the hosts the opening win.  Set 2 was similar, as a Chelsea McGowan kills cut The C of I lead to 10-9, but the Yotes used four different combo blocks in an 11-2 run to grab the period.  Set 3 was all Coyotes, as Janel Porter had a pair of aces and a pair of Hulsey/Madison Curtis blocks helped The C of I to a 13-3 lead, with the squad never threatened.

For the Yotes (16-1, 11-0 CCC), Nawahine had nine kills and eight digs, Liz Myers had seven kills, and Curtis added five kills and five blocks in the victory.  Kelsey Soos recorded her second double-double of the season with 24 assists and 10 digs, with Whitney Brigham leading all players with 17 digs.

NCU got six kills each from Maren Mansfield and McGowan, with Janel Fetters adding five kills.  Setter Cori Wallace had a team-high 21 assists and nine digs, with Libero Dana Clark recording 16 digs.

The Beacons will be back in action on Friday when they return home to face Warner Pacific College at 7:00 pm.
