Offense Explodes in Season Opener

REDDING, Calif. – The Northwest Christian University women's soccer team won their first season-opener since 2006 on Friday night, dropping Southwestern College of Arizona, 12-0 in a neutral site contest being played in Redding, California. NCU moved to 2-1-1 all-time in season opening games.

The Beacon attack was relentless, scoring their first goal just eight minutes into the game. Karli Vath took a pass from Heather Henderson to start the year where she left off in 2008, when she shattered the NCU record books on her way to an All-CCC Honorable Mention selection.

Sophomore Brittney Yip scored her first career goal in the 19th minute and the midfielder would have two more goals before half-time, giving her the fifth hat-trick in school history. Freshman Alyssa Romero (pictured) wasted little time in making a solid first impression, scoring a pair of first-half goals. Calie McVicker and Rachel Urista also had first-half scores, giving NCU an 8-0 lead at the intermission.

Play slowed considerably in the second half as Southwestern was forced to play just eight players due to a number of injuries. The Beacons also put just eight on the field, but were still able to come up with four more goals. Brittany McKinley scored in the 57th minute off an assist from Yip. That goal was followed by a score in the 62nd minute by freshman Katy Smith. Henderson got on the board in the 79th minute and Vath punched in her second of the game in the 86th minute, off of another assist from Yip.

The NCU offense wasn't the only story of the game, however, as the Beacon back-field allowed just two shots, both in the second half, including one shot-on-goal. That one on-goal look led to the only save for freshman keeper Shelby Gabrielson, who played all 90 minutes to record her first career shutout.

NCU continued their opening weekend on Saturday with a 4-2 loss to Simpson University. The Beacons couldn't recover from an early 3-0 deficit, despite scores from Henderson and Carlynn Crymes. McVicker made her debut as a goalkeeper in the second half, recording three saves while allowing just one goal.

Northwest Christian will be back in action on Tuesday night as they travel to Salem for a non-conference matchup with Willamette University.
