Battle-Tested Trio Set for NAIA Championships

EUGENE, Ore.  – The NAIA Track & Field National Championship takes place this week with a trio of Bushnell men ready for action. None of the men are strangers to the national spotlight and will look to do big things for the Beacons in Asheville, North Carolina.

LONG JUMP

Junior Kaleo Wellman will get the festivities going for the Beacons on Thursday in the Long Jump.

Wellman is no stranger to the NAIA championships, having qualified for both the indoor and outdoor national championships in each of the past two seasons. He is an All-American, having taken second-place at the Indoor championship as a sophomore. At the outdoor championships in 2025 he finished 14th and will look to improve upon that placement on Thursday.

The junior broke his own school record at Oregon State back in March when he landed a 7.64m (25-00.75) jump which at the time was the best jump in the NAIA for the season and earned him CCC and NAIA Athlete of the Week honors.

With that mark he is currently ranked fourth in the nation among what should be a very strong field for the championship. 17 of the 21 competitors were in the field for the Indoor championship, including seven of the eight Indoor All-Americans. Reigning indoor national champion Elijah Smith (St. Thomas – Florida) is seeded third while the current top seed Jaylen Burris (Voorhees – South Carolina) took third-place back in February.

Only three of the 2025 All-Americans return this year including national champion Maxwell Wordui (Lindsey Wilson  – Kentucky), third-place finisher Royan Walters (William Carey  – Mississippi) and seventh-place finisher Luke Rader (Shawnee State – Ohio). All three are currently seeded behind Wellman at 11th, 12th, and 17th respectively.

TRIPLE JUMP

The Triple Jump competition takes place on Friday with two Beacons taking part. Senior Ty Kishen and junior Jermaine Schexnayder are both slotted to participate in the first flight.

Kishen comes into the event seeded 16th and makes his first trip to the Outdoor championships after jumping at the Indoor championship earlier this season. Kishen finished tenth at that event and narrowly missed an All-American finish by under four inches. Kishen owns the second-longest jump in school history as he landed a 14.90m at the Oregon State High Performance meet earlier this month.

Schexnayder makes his return to the national stage after a one-year absence. He last competed in 2024, when he took tenth-place as he set a school-record at 14.98m (49-01.75). This year he comes in with a season-best 14.63m, which he also hit at the OSU High Performance meet.

The field is ripe with talent, featuring 17 of the 30 competitors from the NAIA Indoor Champions. Seven of the indoor All-Americans will be featured, while four of the 2025 Outdoor All-Americans return.

SCHEDULE

Action starts at 9:00 am on Thursday with the first flight of the Long Jump. Wellman is seeded in the second flight. Then on Friday, Kishen and Schexnayder will compete in the opening flight of the triple jump, starting at 11:30 am.
