ESTACADA, Ore. – The Bushnell women's cross country team got their season underway with a promising start on Friday morning, taking seventh place at the ultra-competitive Lewis & Clark XC Opener at McIver Park.

In a race loaded with NCAA Division I programs, Bushnell finished behind only Corban University among Cascade Conference opponents, scoring 201 points. Oregon State won the race with a perfect score, sweeping the top five spots at the 5000m event.

"We weren't at full strength today, but we ran really well," said Head Coach
Kyle Will.

Cadence Smith (pictured) led the Beacons in 20th place, posting a cross country 5k PR at 19:06.07, a full minute and 14 seconds faster than her previous best 5000-meter time from a year ago.

"The team ran excellent today," said Smith. "All glory to God. I am extremely proud of all the laties for how they raced, especially Hailey and Alyssa for breaking 20 minutes in their first college races. I am excited for what is to come."

A pair of freshmen were next for Bushnell as
Hailey Jackson (30th, 19:32.83) and
Alyssa Clark (38th, 19:57.54) made their collegiate debuts.

The scoring five were rounded out by freshmen
Audrey Sommerville in 68th, and
Annika Kimball in 77th.
Â
Also running in the season premiere were
Jordan Lauinger (84th),
Sidney Lane (86th),
Sienna Lillebo (87th),
Karlee Myers (98th), and
Charlotte Weiskind (110th).

For both
Sidney Lane (22:31.73) and
Karlee Myers (23:06.19), the first race of the season brought new PRs as well.

Up next for Bushnell will be Western Oregon University's Ash Creek Collegiate, taking place on September 12th at the Ash Creek Preserve in Monmouth.
