ASHLAND, Ore. – Sophomore
Jermaine Schexnayder (pictured) made the most of his second trip to the CCC championships, bringing home a pair of first-place medals and single-handedly scoring 19 points to lead the Beacons on Saturday.
Â
Bushnell opened up the day in a big way with the triple jump competition, taking home three of the top-four finishes, including a second straight championship in the event for Schexnayder. His best jump of 14.84m (48-08.25) was the second-longest in school history and just under two inches shy of his own school record, set one year ago as he won the triple jump championship as a freshman.
Â
Junior
Ty Kishen finished the triple jump in third place to earn All-Conference honors with a personal-record of 14.39m. His jump is the seventh-longest in school history. Freshman
Elliot Nofziger rounded out the scoring for the Beacons in fourth place (12.81m), also setting a new personal best.
Â
Schexnayder wasn't done as he closed his day in the high jump, tying for the CCC Championship with Eastern Oregon senior Tyler Jones at 2.05m (6-08.00). The duo matched each other jump-for-jump throughout the competition as Schexnayder improved upon his runner-up finish from last season with a brand new school record.
Â
Also scoring points in the high jump for the Beacons were
Taylor Jackson, taking sixth place (1.91m) and Nofziger tying for eighth.
Â
Bushnell's only points on the track on Saturday came in the closing event, the 4x400m relay. The team of Jackson,
Kian Lamb,
Blake Thornton, and Kishen earned seventh place for the final two points for the Beacons.
Â
Saturday followed a strong opening day on Friday for the Beacons, which was also dominated by the jumpers.
Â
Sophomore
Kaleo Wellman earned All-CCC honors as he finished second in the Long Jump. It was a dramatic end for Wellman and British Columbia sophomore Lyle Lo. Lo, the defending conference champion, held the event lead from his very first attempt at 7.19 meters, only to see Wellman tie him on his penultimate jump.
Â
In the final round, Wellman landed a 7.28m (23-10.75) to take the lead, only to see Lo repeat as champion with a final leap of 7.49 meters. Wellman earned eight points for the Beacons, and had the best mark ever at the conference championship with the fifth-longest jump in school history.
Â
Also scoring points for the Beacons in the long jump were Kishen in sixth place (6.68m/21-11.00) and
Hunter Reininger in seventh (6.53m/21-05.25).
Â
Bushnell's only other points on Friday came from
Hudson Gerlits in the 110m Hurdles as the freshman took sixth-place with a new personal best time of 16.24 seconds, and from the 4x100 relay which scored one point for their eighth-place finish.
Â
Also highlighting Friday's competition was Sophomore
Maxwell Al-Rubaie who once again cracked his own school record in the hammer throw, this time uncorking a 43.67-meter toss (143-03) to improve his mark by over five feet. He made the event finals for the first time and finished ninth.Â
Â
Blake Thornton had a strong showing for the Beacons in the 400m as he popped a 50.37 run, tying for the ninth-best mark in school history and the fastest lap for the Beacons in four years.
Â
With 52.5 total points, the Beacons finished the festivities in seventh place. Eastern Oregon scored 203 on their way to a fifth straight CCC Championship.
