EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell outdoor track & field teams were in action in Eugene on Saturday, taking part in the Lane Community College Open. A host of personal records were set despite the poor weather, with a staggering of new Cascade Conference Qualifiers thrown in as well.
Â
"It was a tough day today and the weather was not our friend," said Director of Track & Field
Kyle Will. "The best weather was early in the morning for the 10K, and Sidney and Grant had a strong first effort. We had a lot of personal records and good things out there. Given what we had to deal with, with the cold, wet, windy day, I was really pleased with how we competed."
Â
Two Bushnell women,
Cadence Smith and
Leah Schiewe punched their tickets to the conference championships on Saturday. Smith ran a 12:02.15 in the steeplechase, taking fourth-place with a new personal best. Schiewe cleared the qualifying distance in the shot put, taking fifth place at 10.72m (35-02.00) to book a return trip to the CCC meet in May.
Â
The women also saw a strong third-place finish in the long jump for
Trinity Hazelitt with a personal record 4.92 meters (16-01.75) while
Jordan Lauinger took third in the 400m hurdles (1:11.93). Lauinger has already qualified for conference in her event while Hazelitt landed just six centimeters shy.
Â
On the men's side,
Maui Richmond (6.37m/20-10.75) and
Ty Kishen (6.36m/20-10.50) earned CCC qualifiers in the long jump while
Gabe Evans (11.92m/39-01.25) posted a new personal record and landed right on the conference standard in the triple jump. Bushnell has now qualified eleven men for the CCC championship with eight coming in the jumping events.
Â
One of the other qualifiers for conference is
Maxwell Al-Rubaie in the hammer throw. This week he once again improved his own school record and CCC qualifying mark, hitting 42.06m (138-00). He currently ranks fifth in the CCC in the event.
Â
"Max continues to improve by leaps and bounds and it's pretty amazing to watch," said Coach Will. "He keeps getting closer to the national mark, he is working hard and it is paying off."
Â
UP NEXT: Bushnell will remain in Eugene for another week as a select group of athletes are expected to earn spots in the Oregon Preview Meet at Hayward Field.
