MILWAUKIE, Ore. – The Bushnell baseball team lost to Warner Pacific for the first time in school history but used a seven-run eighth inning in game two to salvage a double-header split and claim their fourth series win of the season.
Head Coach
Jamie Womack said, "We came out flat for about 15 innings today. It cost us more in game one, and when our backs were against the wall in game two, our guys found a way to scratch and claw back for a victory.
Max Chapman continues to grow in every start and we saw good appearances from
Jayden Soriano and
Alec Gums today.
Nate Stevens also shined in some big moments today when we needed it most."
GAME ONE: Warner Pacific 6, Bushnell 5
The Knights were able to avoid the sweep and picked up their first-ever win against the Beacons in the opener, getting a walk-off RBI double.
The Beacons had led 5-3 after the top of the seventh inning, thanks to a three-run homer from
Nate Stevens in the fourth, a solo shot from
Jordan Wilson in the sixth, his 30th career homer, and an RBI single from
Ethan Stacy (pictured) the seventh.
The loss wasted a strong seven-inning start from
Max Chapman, who struck out seven batters, giving up four earned runs.
GAME TWO: Bushnell 10, Warner Pacific 8
The Knights (4-6, 2-4 CCC) looked to be on their way to their first double-header sweep in school history, as they led 7-2 heading into the eighth inning of the non-conference fourth game of the series.
Bushnell, however, was about to mount a huge comeback with a
Max Richards RBI double in the sixth inning as an appetizer for a seven-run eighth inning main course, capped by a two-RBI Richards double.
The Beacons finished the game with 14 hits, including three-hit games from Richards and
Will Hudler and two hits apiece from Wilson,
Caleb Richter, and Stevens.
After some strong pitching throughout the weekend, the Beacons were able to intentionally get some work in for the bullpen as six total pitchers saw action.
Ethan Sachs struck out four batters through three innings in his first start of the season.
Jayden Soriano (3-0) earned the victory with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and
Alec Gums registered his second save of the season, recording the final six outs.
UP NEXT: Bushnell (12-3, 4-2 CCC) will come back home next weekend for another CCC series, taking on Corban University (6-8, 2-4) beginning on Friday at 2:00 pm.
