NEWBERG, Ore. – The Beacons had to pivot due to weather-related travel concerns this week, but the adjustment had no ill effect on sophomore
Kaleo Wellman, who added his name to the growing list of qualifiers for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Â
Originally scheduled to compete in Reno, Nevada at the UNR Indoor facility, the team called a mid-week audible and headed to the George Fox Indoor instead. While the GFU facility is limited in scope, with only field events and 60-meter distances on the track, the Beacons made the most of it with 22 athletes in action across the men's and women's teams. Those competitors accounted for six personal records and three school records, in addition to a large number of first-time participation across the board.

Head Coach and Director of Track & Field
Kyle Will said, "I think that today went really well at a weird meet. We pivoted from our original plans and the team handled it well and performed well. All of our long jumpers had a really good day, jumping further than they were at this point in the season last year."
Â
Wellman led the way, besting a field of 23 long jumpers to win the event with a school-record leap of 7.19 meters (23-07.25). He cleared the NAIA "B" qualification standard by over four inches.
Â
Junior
Ty Kishen also had a strong day in the long jump, taking fifth-place and setting a new personal record of 6.43m. Sophomore Jahlin Green PR'd as well, at 5.87m.
Â
Also once again breaking both of his own school records was sophomore
Maxwell Al-Rubaie in the Shot Put (11.38m/37-4.00) and Weight Throw (13.56m/44-6.0). He took fourth-place in the latter, in a field of throwers.
Â
On the women's side
Cyan Kelso-Reynolds led the way once again taking third-place in the long jump and setting a personal record at 5.15m (16-10.75). She was also the top Beacon finisher among seven in the 60m run, establishing her first-time collegiate best at 8.15 seconds.
Â
The Beacons will close out the indoor regular season next weekend as they compete for the first time at the new Eastern Oregon University indoor facility in the EOU Last Chance Invitational. Any additional qualifiers will join Wellman and sophomore
Jermaine Schexnayder (Triple Jump) at the NAIA National Championships, beginning February 27.
