Heider Hoists Beacons to Win Over No. 18 Eagles

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 23-ranked Bushnell University volleyball team earned their fourth win of the season over an NAIA Top-25 team on Friday night, taking down No. 18-ranked Northwest University on the road in four sets, 21-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-20. Senior Outside Hitter Hailey Heider provided one of the most dominant performance of her career, posting 20 kills.

Bushnell (15-10, 9-6 CCC) conquered one of the most difficult road venues in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, and completed a season-sweep over the Eagles (13-8, 7-8) behind a .310 attack percentage and a 13-2 margin in blocks.

Head Coach Jason Corwin said, "This was a great win for our program tonight. Northwest is a very hard place to play. We trained a little differently this week and it really made a difference staying focused on our goals and standards from set-to-set. We cleaned up our unforced errors from the first set and were able to apply a lot of pressure on them. All phases were really on display tonight and I am proud of how we competed."

The Beacons recovered from a slow start to the match, taking three straight sets after dropping the opener, including a dominant third set that featured 17 kills without an error for a .586 attacking percentage.

Heider couldn't be stopped, hitting .405 with a season-high in kills, adding nine digs and four blocks. She accounted for nearly a third of Bushnell's points scored. Leah Agost and Amyah Semau added nine kills apiece, with Semau adding a match-high 15 digs.

"I am so proud of how hard the team played," said Heider. "Even after dropping the first set, we played together and found their weaknesses. Everyone did their jobs which makes it so fun."

Agost added, "After the first set, we maintained our standard of play and worked hard together. We took care of the ball and finished strong."

Genevieve Robinson was strong on the right side, posting seven kills without an error while Soliel Sands adding five kills and a match-high seven blocks.  Emma Fa'alogo led the Beacons with 27 assists and three service aces.

"We worked hard tonight and we knew what we needed to do," said Robinson. "We worked great together and had amazing energy through the match. I am so proud of this team for never letting up."

The Eagles were led in defeat by Kaitlyn Mickle, with 12 kills. Aubree Dees 13 digs and five aces and Morgan Harter led all players with 29 assists in the loss.

The victory helps Bushnell keep pace with (RV) Walla Walla University for fourth-place in the Cascade Conference.

UP NEXT: The Beacons close out their Washington road swing on Saturday evening, taking on The Evergreen State College (1-18, 1-14) in Olympia at 4:00 pm.
