PORTLAND, Ore. – The Bushnell Indoor Track & Field Team got their season off on a positive note over the weekend, with five school records at the Portland Indoor, co-hosted by the University of Portland and Portland State.
Â
Sunday's track events featured a pair of distance records, with both the men's and women's 1000m events. On the men's side,
Logan Gant (pictured) became the first Beacon to ever run the 1000m event, establishing a new school record at 2:57.67. The sophomore also set a new personal record in the 600m earlier in the day, taking seventh-place with a run of one minute, 27.68 seconds. His time was less than a second shy of a school record as well.
Â
For the women, it was freshman
Cadence Smith (pictured), breaking the record, set by
Kaitlin Cook last season, by a full ten seconds (3:20.40).
Â
The throws crew had been in action on Saturday at Portland State, and the Beacons went 3-for-3 on school records. In the women's shot put,
Leah Schiewe took second place and earned a new school record with a throw of 10.96m (35' 11.5"). She broke the previous record of 10.87m, set by Dakota Underwood in 2022.
Â
In the men's shot put, it was
Maxwell Al-Rubaie breaking his own record set last season as he claimed a fifth-place heave of 11.10m (36'5"). Also competing was
Jonathan Paz Perez who hit a new personal record at 10.47m (34' 4.25").
Â
In the men's weight throw, Al-Rubaie claimed his second school record of the day at 13.35m (43' 9.75"). For this one, he broke the record of teammate Paz Perez which was set last season. Paz Perez also competed and set another personal record as well, throwing 10.25m (33' 7.5").
Â
All told, 41 personal records were either established or broken over the weekend. This included an impressive third-place finish out of 36 runners in the men's 200m as freshman
Blake Thornton posted a 23.56, leading a crew of 13 Beacons that ran the event.
Â
After the event, head coach
Kyle Will said, "We had a good day today, especially for our first meet at a weird 240 meter track. Largely we were just working on conditioning, but I was really impressed with our team. A lot of our sprinters and jumpers competed in the 600m and put in a great effort. This gives us a good idea of where we are currently as we prepare for the University of Washington meet next week and Reno in two weeks."

Bushnell returns to action on Friday and Saturday, competing in the University of Washington Invitational.
