EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore
Cory Johnson (pictured) hit eight three pointers including seven in the second half as Bushnell cruised past Multnomah University on Friday night, 103-76.
Â
Johnson finished the game with 26 points after going 7-for-7 from outside the arc in the second half. His eight triples is the fourth best single-game in school history and were the most in four years. He added ten rebounds for a double-double.
Â
The Beacons were locked in a slugfest in the first half as the teams traded nine leads and nine ties over the first 16 minutes of the game. Trailing 36-35 with 4:48 remaining,
Trevon Richmond hit a three-pointer to give Bushnell the lead for good as they closed the half on a 14-2 run.
Â
The second half didn't prove to be too much of a contest as the Beacons continued to pull away. Head Coach
Eddie Alexander said, "It was a great bounce-back game for our guys as we've been fighting through adversity and a four-game losing streak. I am proud of the way we refocused this week in practice and it paid off tonight."
Â
Bushnell (10-9, 7-6 CCC) shot 50% in the game and were 59% from three-point range, thanks in large part to the 8-for-10 effort from Johnson. The Beacons out-rebounded Multnomah 53-32 and earned a 48-25 advantage in points off the bench, behind Johnson's 26 and 15 from
Luke Smith who hit three treys.
Â
"Luke and Cory came out aggressive tonight," said Alexander, "and Cory really got hot in the second half. I was proud of them as they did their jobs well.
Kell Schwers was a difference maker for us off the bench. He keeps getting more comfortable and I fell like it was a great game for him tonight."
Â
Not to be outdone, senior
Stevie Schlabach added another 23 points to his massive career total as he hit three triples and was 6-for-7 at the free-throw line.
Spencer Hoffman also secured a massive stat line with 14 points and a season-high 19 rebounds, missing his career high by just one.
Â
Multnomah (8-11, 3-10) shot 40% in the game and was led by 18 points from Miles Macadory and a 13-point, 15-rebound double-double for Tyrese Taylor.
Â
The Beacons will return to action at 5:00 pm on Saturday as they play host to Warner Pacific University.
