Beacons Survive to Keep Pace in CCC

EUGENE, Ore. – Bushnell led by as many as 17 points in the second half on Friday night and hung on for a 92-89 victory over Eastern Oregon University in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
 
With the win, the Beacons (9-5, 6-2 CCC) keep pace among the competitive top-half of the CCC standings as they move into a three-way tie of two-loss teams currently sitting in fourth-place in the standings.
 
Head Coach Eddie Alexander said, "The guys responded well in our single-digit victory tonight. We needed a close one that went our way in order to get some experience and learning how to finish a game. Several guys had some key moments that truly impacted the win tonight. I expect that we will shoot the three-pointer much better tomorrow night."
 
The Beacons shot 60% in the contest and hit 24 of 31 free-throw attempts to help ice the victory, and were 6-for-19 from beyond the arc. The home team held a 32-30 edge in rebounding, but were out-scored on second-chance points, 17-12.
 
Four players were in double-figures for Bushnell, led by 27 points from Stevie Schlabach and 24 from Kaden Sand (pictured). Both players were 9-for-13 from the field with Sand added team-highs with eight rebounds and four assists.
 
Trevon Richmond added 11 points while Spencer Hoffman scored ten points and four assists.  
 
Eastern Oregon (4-11, 3-6) shot 49% in the game including a 19-for-36 during their comeback has they landed ten three-pointers over the final 20 minutes. The Mounties bench out-scored the Bushnell reserves, 29-13.
 
AJ Huddleston finished with a team-high 23 points, hitting five triples, while Malachi Afework came in off the bench to score 18 points with a game-high five assists. Also in double-figures were Garrett Hawkes with 17 and Jonny Hillman with 15.
 
The Beacons close out the weekend on Saturday with a big showdown against No. 5-ranked College of Idaho (12-2, 7-1 CCC) at 5:00 pm. The Yotes are one of three teams tied atop the CCC standings with one loss.
