LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Bushnell women's track & field team had a big weekend at the Cascade Collegiate Conference championships, scoring five school records on their way to a seventh-place finish.
"What a great meet for our student-athletes," said Director of Track & Field
Tom Boldon. "Between our men's and women's teams, it wasn't just seven school records, but it was the 19 lifetime bests, the 12 athletes competing at conference for the first time and the seven who scored for the first time as our teams finished seventh. It was a weekend to remember. We had so many athletes who out-performed their seeding to score points."
Leading the way for the Beacons was freshman sprinter
Janea Robertson, who had a hand in three school records. On Friday, the indoor school record holder in the 400m added the outdoor record as well with a sprint of 59.30 seconds, distancing herself from the mark set by Bri Jury (59.85, 2019). She took sixth place as just the second Beacon to ever break 60 seconds. Another Beacon, however, came close. Junior
Adrienne Mai added a PR in the event at 60.04 seconds, taking ninth-place with the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Robertson added a new record in the 200m on Saturday, taking fifth-place with a time of 25.37. She toppled the previous record, which had been in place for four years, by four tenths of a second.
The final school record was one of redemption as Robertson joined Mai,
Olivia Bailon, and
Maddii Desemone to set a new standard in the 4x400m relay (4:02.47) by over two seconds, after the 4x100 meter team dropped the baton on Friday. Boldon said, "our relay team really bounced back from the disqualification on Friday to set the school record. I am so proud of their resiliency."
Friday also featured a school record in the long jump for junior
Mayah Pappas, who landed a 5.71m (18'8.75") effort that ended the seven-year reign of Shaneesa Applegate (5.60, 2017), who's mark was also set at the CCC Championships. Pappas hit an NAIA "B" Standard, and missed the automatic qualifying mark by just one and a half inches. She took sixth-place.
Saturday also included a new school record in the Discus with freshman
Leah Schiewe passing the previous best set by Myah Harter in 2018. Her record-setting throw went 38.90 meters (127'7") which was good for fifth-place.
Other Highlights for the Beacons:
- Libby Mathis (11.42m/37'5.75") and Dakota Underwood (10.88m/35'8.50") scored points for the Beacons in the Shot Put, taking sixth and seventh places respectively. For Underwood it was a career-high as she moved up from the 12th seed.
- Kaitlin Cook scored one point, taking eighth place in the 3000m Steeplechase (13:03.10).
- Sophomore Maddii Desemone ran a personal best 12.61 in the 100m, cracking the Bushnell top-ten for the first time with the fifth-fastest time in school history. Robertson was close behind at 12.64, which ranks sixth.
- On the same day she graduated with the President's Scholastic Award from Bushnell, Rebecca Kuskie took sixth-place in the 5000m.
"The future is bright," said Boldon, "not just because of the talent coming back and the talent coming in, but because these kids are amazing people. they represented our school so well and we are so blessed they are Beacons."
