It is truly what makes being a Bushnell Student-Athlete a special experience. It is in the DNA of the athletics program and at the heart of the
Tri-Athlete Model. And during the 2021-2022 school year, character-related initiatives continued to give Bushnell a chance to be a true Beacon in the Eugene-Springfield community and beyond.
Every Bushnell team commits to two service opportunities throughout the year and for most, that minimum is eclipsed early. Beacon student-athletes produce thousands of hours of community service annually through school, team, and individual projects.
During Bushnell's
Embrace the Community Day in fall, teams partnered with numerous non-profits throughout the region including CASA, One Hope, Hosea House, the Hope Project, Luper Pioneer Cemetery, Mount Pisgah, Hendricks Park, St. Vincent De Paul, Hope Ranch Ministries, Food For Lane County, Looking Glass, and many more.
Teams created Thanksgiving food baskets, collected gifts for an Adopt-A-Family project at Christmas, tutored, coached youth sports, cleaned and refurbished living spaces at the Eugene Mission and so much more.
For the second straight year, Athletic Director
Corey Anderson even got into the action, playing "Zoom Santa Claus" for children through a partnership with the Eugene Family YMCA.
As the world slowly begins to emerge from the pandemic, Bushnell saw a return to the global landscape this May will school-sponsored mission trips to Puerto Rico and Mexico. Among the teams were multiple student-athletes and coaches, able to play a role in building and rebuilding homes and churches, and ministering to the often unnoticed and overlooked.
Bushnell athletes choose to be Beacons for Christ in the community, simply out of a natural calling to be part of something bigger than themselves, not for the recognition. It speaks volumes, however, about the impact of the Bushnell Tri-Athlete model, that once again multiple "Character" awards that are given out by the Cascade Collegiate Conference, and voted on by CCC Athletic Directors, went to Bushnell this season. In their first year as a relaunched program, the Bushnell Baseball team was named
CCC Teams of Character while softball player Sam Silver was named the
CCC Female Champion of Character.
