Pappas, Underwood Lead Beacons at Second Indoor Event

Complete Results

NEWBERG, Ore.  – Bushnell continued their indoor track & field season on Saturday, competing in the Portland Indoor Three meet at the Austin Sports Complex.

Dakota Underwood (pictured, left) provided one of many highlights for the Beacons as she established a new school standard in the Shot Put. Underwood becomes the first Beacon ever to compete in the indoor shot put event, and in doing so, she establishes a first-time record with her third-place mark of 10.87m (35'8"). She was the top NAIA finisher in the event.

On the men's side, Jaron Carter continued his hot start to the year, winning the 60m dash with a time of 7.08. He defeated the top sprinters from both Multnomah and Southern Oregon in the process, and tied for the third-fastest time in school history.

Another event victory came in the women's long jump where Mayah Pappas (pictured, right) claimed the title by besting a twelve-woman field. Her winning mark of 5.24m (17'2.25") is a new personal record and the fifth-best indoor jump in school history.

Also competing in the long jump were Carina Haas and Trinity Hazelitt. Haas was unable to register a qualifying mark, but Hazelitt made her collegiate track & field debut with a top leap of 4.49 (14'8.75") meters.

Faith Palmer also made her collegiate debut in the high jump, finishing sixth with a top bar clearance of 1.42m.

Director of Track & Field Tom Boldon said, "Today was another step toward the outdoor season with solid marks by some and a taste of indoor competition for the first time for others. Dakota looked really good and gained some confidence along with a new school record. Mayah continues to jump well and is just scratching the surface of her potential. Jaron looked really strong in the final today and should be ready for some better competition next week at the Husky Classic."

The Beacon indoor track & field teams will close out the season next weekend, traveling to the University of Washington's Husky Classic on Friday and Saturday and then the Portland Indoor Four on Sunday.
