Overwatch Loses Two Heartbreakers

10/28/2019 2:07:00 PM

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University Overwatch team will turn their attention to Phase Two of the Second-Chance bracket in the 2019 Varsity Series after losing to Kent State University and Ashland University on Saturday.

GAME ONE: NCU 0, KSU 2

NCU took Kent State University (NCAA DI) to the brink in consecutive matches but ultimately fell to the Golden Flashes 0-2.

Starting on Lijiang Tower chosen by Tespa, NCU lost a heartbreaker in overtime as KSU took the first point. The Beacons bounced back quickly though and were able to win the second point, however, the Golden Flashes would ultimately prevail and take point three and win the game.

In losing the game, it was NCU's choice for map two (hybrid). NCU chose the familiar King's Row. The Beacons would start on the offensive and move the payload 66.72 meters, just missing point 3. While the Beacons put up a valiant fight, KSU was able to advance the payload and collect point 3.

Lineup:
DPS: Akito Ryuzaki, Tyler Chase
Support: Alex Daraban, Jesse Gerlach
Tank: Daniel Gerlach, Chase Dean

GAME TWO: NCU 0, AU 2

Despite losing a heart breaker in match one of the day, NCU again put up a great fight against Ashland University (NCAA DII) who has lost just one match and two games in the second-chance bracket. Unfortunately, the game (again) did not go the Beacons' way.

Starting again on Lijiang Tower, the Beacons lost first point to the Eagles. Despite taking the second point to overtime, the Beacons would again fall just short and lose the game 0-2.

NCU elected again to play on King's Row and start on the offensive. The Beacons were only able to move the payload 44.54 meters and collect two points. AU was able to collect three points and win the match.

For the first time this year, this Beacons made a change in their starting six and called Kenyon Webster-Lorentzen (KENY116) to play in his first ever collegiate match.

Lineup:
DPS: Akito Ryuzaki, Tyler Chase
Support: Alex Daraban, Jesse Gerlach
Tank: Daniel Gerlach, Kenyon Webster-Lorentzen

Overwatch will now await to see where they will be seeded as they prepare for the play-in stage which starts November 2. The play-in stage will be a single elimination bracket for a chance to qualify for playoffs.
