GULF SHORES, Ala. - The storied women's cross country & distance track senior class capped off their careers on Saturday and did it in style with three more All-American honors bestowed and enough points scored to give NCU a 12th-place team finish.
The day started with a literal and figurative splash with the women's 3000m Steeplechase final.
Michelle Fletcher came home in sixth place (11:03.20) and was followed closely in seventh by
Macie Gale (11:06.15).
For Fletcher it was her third career All-American honor while
Macie Gale (pictured) ended her collegiate competition by grabbing her first.
Later in the day it was
Sierra Brown and
Shea Vallaire's turn in the 5000m race. Brown gave her all, pulling out a fifth place finish. She came across the line in 17:41.20 and was just two seconds out of third place.
The All-American honor was a significant one as it was her sixth career prize. Brown breaks a tie that she had with former teammate
Alyssa Harmon and is now NCU's first six-time All-American.
Unfortunately, the race did not go as well for Vallaire. Attempting to complete a 20000m weekend. After her All-American turn in the 10k on Thursday and the 5k preliminary race on Friday, She gave every last ounce that she had left in her but was unable to finish the race.
NCU ended the weekend with 21 points, two shy of their total from 2016 when they took 11th place. For the second straight year, however, the Beacons are the highest placed team from the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Southern Oregon finished 20th with 16 points.
In August of 2013, Natalie Kogutkeiwicz, Harmon, Brown, Vallaire, Gale, and Fletcher all stepped foot on the NCU campus for the first time. With the final chapter finally closing today, that group completes a run that included an NAIA National Cross Country Championship, two other top-three finishes at nationals, three team CCC cross country titles, three Conference Runners of the year, seven individual CCC champions, and 17 All-American honors.
