EUGENE, Ore.  – The NCU men's basketball team, ranked No. 8 in NAIA Division II, put together another record setting performance on Tuesday night, rolling past cross-town foe New Hope Christian College, 107-61.
Â
The win gave NCU just their second 100-point performance of the season and was their 11th straight win. The Beacons out-rebounded the Deacons 73-25, slaughtering the former single-game rebounding record of 63.
Â
A big part of the rebounding effort came from
Jay Mayernik who posted his third game of the season with at least 20 rebounds and produced the first 20-20 game on record for the Beacons, scoring 23 points and 21 boards.
Â
With Mayernik taking care of business inside, court general
Kenny Blackwell (pictured) was busy feeding the ball to his teammates as he collected a school-record 13 assists, adding five points and eight rebounds.
Â
NCU (19-3) finished the game shooting 54% from the field as they posted their largest margin of victory since October 8 against Northwest Indian College. Mayernik's 22 points led the way, followed by
Brock Rice off the bench with 14.
Malik Heptot and
Michael Loomis each came off the bench to score 13 as the NCU reserves out-scored the New Hope bench, 58-11. Also in double-figures was
Brendyn Taylor, scoring 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting including a pair of jaw-dropping alley-oop dunks off lobs from Blackwell.
Â
The Deacons (4-21) shot 29% from the field, hitting 12 three-pointers. Jaylen Rose led the way, scoring 20 points. Isiah Large added 12 points, all in the first half, along with three assists.
Â
The victory improves NCU to 11-0 at home on the season and gives them their 16th straight home victory against non-CCC opponents. They're last non-conference loss in the Morse Event Center was on November 30, 2013. The Beacons are also 39-3 at home over the past three seasons.
Â
Northwest Christian, currently in first place in the Cascade Conference, will look to continue the winning streak in Washington this weekend. They will face off against Evergreen on Friday and Northwest on Saturday with both games scheduled for 7:30 pm start times.Â
