Beacons Claim Tenth Straight Win

EUGENE, Ore.  – The Beacons won their tenth straight game and remained undefeated at home as the knocked off Walla Walla University on Saturday night, 95-72.

The Wolves kept things interesting early, sticking with the high flying NCU attack and grabbing a 28-26 lead when Chad Torkelson drained a three-pointer with 8:11 remaining in the first half.

NCU quickly responded and took the lead for good at the four minute mark on a pair of free throws by Jay Mayernik. The Beacons took an eight point lead into halftime, 47-39.

Walla Walla continued to stay in the game in the second half and were still down by just eight points, 64-56, with ten minutes to go. That, however, was when the Beacons put on the afterburners. A layup from Brendyn Taylor sparked a 12-2 run that put the game out of reach.

NCU (18-3, 12-2 CCC) shot 44.9% in the game and was just 12-for-35 from three-point range but the team capitalized on 17 Wolf turnovers, collecting 11 steals.

The Beacons had four players in double-figures led by Kenny Blackwell and Austin Tyner with 18 points each. Blackwell added six assists to the mix while Tyner collected two blocks and three steals. Jack Hackman ended the game with 15 points and Bradley Laubacher (pictured) scored a season-high 14. Mayernik was kept quiet on the scoreboard with just six points but the NAIA's rebounding leader added another 15 boards including five on the offensive glass.

Walla Walla (3-19, 2-12) also had four players in double-figures with Alec Calloway's 14 leading the charge. Chad Torkelson came off the bench to score 13, shooting 3-for-5 from three point range, and Isaiah Taylor also posted a trio of treys, scoring 11. Dylan Browning added ten in the losing effort.

The Wolves shot 44.6% in the game and was perfect (6-for-6) at the free-throw line. They also claimed a victory in the rebounding battle, 39-37.

The Beacons will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host cross-town foe New Hope Christian College in a non-conference affair at 7:00 p.m.
