EUGENE, Ore. – In what was one of their most well played games of the season, the Northwest Christian University women's soccer team fell one win short of a school-record with a 2-1 loss to Southern Oregon University.
Head Coach
Jonathan Rea said, “This is the kind of game that we should play every week, doing all of the things that I expect this team to do. We possessed the ball, we competed on every play.”
In the final game of the season the team made some changes to the formation and to the personnel and it seemed to pay dividends. “I was really pleased with our midfield tonight,” said Rea. “We moved
Jeneca Hoidal up to her natural position in the middle and moved
Alyssa Romero to the back and it worked really well.”
Southern Oregon got both goals that they would need early on. Denise Powell scored in the 9th minute taking a through-ball from Tori Chambliss and taking advantage of a one-on-one opportunity against NCU's goalkeeper
Calie McVicker. Then in the 16th minute Alexis Mahoney passed the ball from left to right across the box and Stacy Szeto shot the ball back over to the right for what would become the game-winning score.
The NCU defense buckled down from there, allowing just two more shots the rest of the night, both in the second half. McVicker ended her night with just one save as the Beacon defenders kept her out of trouble.
The Beacons got their scoring opportunity in the second half.
Brittany McKinley sent a 40-yard free kick into the box in the 64th minute.
Sarah Stalling was there and made a one-time pass over to a wide open
Heather Henderson, who fired home the score.
The Beacons out-shot SOU 7-5 in the game, getting five shots on goal compared to just three for the Raiders. Northwest Christian also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-1.
Northwest Christian (3-14, 2-7 CCC) finishes the season in ninth-place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Despite the win, Southern Oregon (7-8-2, 5-3-1 CCC) ends their season in fifth place in the conference. Earlier on Saturday Oregon Tech (6-3 CCC) defeated Corban College to jump into fourth place to steal the final post-season berth.
