LEWISTON, Idaho – After a pitchers duel for most of the afternoon, Bushnell emerged with a four-run ninth inning and held on for a 5-4 win over No. 12-ranked Lewis-Clark State College in Cascade Collegiate Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon.
Â
Each team collected just six hits in the game, and the Beacons (11-11, 3-6 CCC) survived a three-error afternoon to emerge victorious, handing the Warriors (14-3, 6-3) just their third loss of the season.
"I am very proud of our guys today," said head coach
Jamie Womack. "They took a really tough day yesterday and tough weekend last week and didn't it break them. Kai continues to build on a great year and I am proud of everyone's effort throughout. We need to harness that feeling and bring it forward every day we step on the field."
Â
Kai Keamo (pictured) got things started well for the Beacons going six innings and not allowing a hit until the sixth while striking out six batters. He left the game in a 1-1 tie, having given up they tying run on a wild pitcher after
Dylan Carson's tenth home run of the season gave Bushnell the early lead in the third inning.
Â
Hunter Schwenk threw 1.1 innings in relief, striking out three batters, but his error on a pick-off attempt led to the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, giving LC State a 2-1 lead heading into the ninth.
Â
With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth,
Davis Grawey tied the game with an RBI single. An error by the Warriors led to two runs before Carson made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Beacons gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but
Jahshua Yacapin was able to hold on for the save, striking out two batters.
Â
Tristan Mallari (1-0) claimed the victory with just 0.2 innings of relief work in the eighth inning, keeping his season ERA at 0.00.
