Beacons Swept by No. 10 Thunderbirds

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The University of British Columbia came to town on Friday, opening a three-game weekend set by taking a pair from Bushnell University, 11-1 and 10-4.

GAME ONE: University of British Columbia 11, Bushnell 1 (7 Innings)

The defending Cascade Conference champions set the tone right away in the opener, breaking the game open with a seven-run second inning before out-hitting the Beacons 11-5 in a run-rule victory.

Austin Wolfe (2-2) was chased after two innings, giving up seven earned on seven hits. Meanwhile, UBC's Will Anderson (1-2) threw six strong innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out six.

Albert Jennings led the Bushnell offense, hitting 2-for-3 while Mason Millar connected on an RBI single to score the Beacons only run in the bottom of the third inning.

GAME TWO: University of British Columbia 10, Bushnell 4

The Thunderbirds completed the double-header sweep as they produced 13 hits. It took a little longer for them to get going, however, as Loreto Siniscalchi put together a productive start with four innings, allowing just one earned run.

The Thunderbirds scored one in the second, only to have Bushnell answer in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Nate Stevens.

The game remained tied until the fifth when UBC added three runs, before posting another four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Dylan Ha (2-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three earned runs in the fifth. Five Beacon pitchers did combine for nine strikeouts in the game, but were outshined by a 17-strikeout performance from a trio of UBC hurlers. James Brock (3-1) struck out nine in five innings to secure the victory.

Stevens finished the game hitting 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot with three RBI, adding a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Jaden Thomson went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

UP NEXT:
The Beacons (10-8, 2-3 CCC) close out the weekend conference series on Saturday with a single game against UBC (9-6, 3-2), scheduled for 11:00 am.
