Beacons Drop Home Opener to No. 13 OKWU

EUGENE, Ore. - The Bushnell volleyball team was defeated in three sets on Friday evening, falling to No. 13 Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 25-19, 25-12, 25-20 in the first game of the Corban/Bushnell Tournament.

The Beacons (4-4) were unable to handle a two-pronged attack, were out-killed 45-28, out-dug 59-36, and were aced seven times. Oklahoma Wesleyan (5-0) hit .255 in the match, compared to just .127 for the Beacons, despite the home team holding a 7-5 margin in blocks.

The Eagles were led by the potent combination of Evelyn Rohrberg and Maia Rubio, combining for 30 kills while earning 63 of the teams 106 total attacks. Sydney Collins ran the offense with a double-double, posting 41 assists and 14 digs while 6'3" middle Tijana Stojiljkovic earned four blocks.

Bushnell were led by 11 kills from Hailey Heider, who added seven digs. Leah Agost hit .222 with eight kills, posting three blocks. Avery McCallister led the team with 14 assists while Kailey Shirley tied for the match-high with 14 digs.

The biggest bright spot on the night came from junior transfer Genevieve Robinson, who made her Beacon debut in the third set. The middle blocks got a pair of blocks on her first two plays, and finished with three blocks and two kills.

"We had a bit of a rough start to the tournament," said Head Coach Jason Corwin. "I am super proud of how Genevieve came out aggressive and ready to play tonight. She embodied the fearless spirit we are asking of the team. I am hoping the team follows her example and we can bounce back tomorrow."

UP NEXT: Bushnell heads to Salem on Saturday to conclude the tournament, facing off against RV Carroll College (5-1) at 11:30 am and Our Lady of the Lake University (2-4) at 2:00 pm.
