KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A finish 29-hours in the making, the Bushnell baseball team plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning to complete a 14-12 victory over Oregon Tech.
Â
The contest was suspended due to rain on Friday afternoon, tied 10-10 after six innings with weather and poor field conditions forcing the contest to resume a full day after the original stoppage. Â
Â
The first day saw a wet, wild, back-and-fourth affair that included three lead changes, and numerous answers from Oregon Tech after furious offensive outpouring from Bushnell (32-16, 22-13).
Â
Both teams scored four runs in the first inning – as Bushnell got a two-run single from
Jordan Wilson and
Kolby Amaral doubled home a pair, but Tech answered with a Matthew Ortiz bases loaded walk, a Garrett Smith RBI single and a two-run Ty Blakely single.
Â
OIT took a 5-4 lead in the second after Patrick Barry tripled and scored on a Julien Jones sacrifice fly, but the visitors scored four in the fourth inning, capped by a two-run Jennings single to regain the lead at 8-5.
Â
Not to be outdone, Ortiz doubled off the left field wall to plate one and Tam drove in two with a single, with the Owls three-run fourth once again tying the score.
Â
Just before Friday's stoppage, both teams took advantage of the elements to score two sixth inning runs – as a wind-aided two-run single from
Cade Crist gave the Beacons a lead. In the bottom of the frame, an Oregon Tech pop-up was dropped in the downpour, allowing two unearned runs to score to tie the game.
Â
On Saturday, Bushnell sent ole reliable senior
Ethan Sachs (1-1) to the hill for the final three innings, and the Beacon's all-time leader for starts and innings pitched got the job done.
Â
After a scoreless seventh, OIT pushed two runs across in the bottom of the eighth, taking a 12-10 lead on an RBI-single and a sacrifice fly.
Â
Never a team to doubt late in a game, Bushnell rallied once more in the ninth.
Jameson Hussey got the ball rolling with a pinch-hit RBI single and
Albert Jennings (pictured) followed with a game-tying fielders choice that brought Jacob Stoner home.
Â
Will Hudler followed with the go-ahead RBI single and Jacob Richarsdon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the final score.
Â
Sachs shut down OIT with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
Jennings finished the game hitting 3-for-5 with three RBI and Wilson went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Ethan Stacy batted 1-for-3 but reached base multiple times, scoring three runs.
Â
After the game, head coach
Jamie Womack said, "We have faced a lot of adversity over the past 24 hours with some health concerns and with the weather, but I loved our response to it today. The way this group rallies around each other is something that I will always be super proud of. We had zero position players left by the end of the game and it took all of them to fight and claw to this victory. We have a ton of respect for Oregon Tech and we are very appreciative of their thoughts and prayers over the past 24 hours. I look forward to a highly competitive finish to the regular season tomorrow."
Â
UP NEXT: Originally scheduled for Saturday, the final two games of the four-game series with Oregon Tech (34-12, 25-10) will be played on Sunday, beginning at 11:00 am.
