EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell baseball team continues to show they are capable of winning games in a variety of ways, pulling off another CCC series win with a Saturday sweep over Eastern Oregon University with 1-0 and 12-6 wins.
With four more CCC wins, and their eighth straight series win this season, Bushnell (27-6, 17-4 CCC) will finish out the weekend no worse than tied for second-place in the Cascade Conference and one game out of first place. Lewis-Clark State split their weekend opening double-header with Oregon Tech and are 15-4 in conference play with a pair of games set for Sunday. Both teams trail the University of British Columbia, who went 4-0 this weekend to improve to 18-3.
Head Coach
Jamie Womack said, "Two very different wins for us today. Game one was another big outing by the pitching staff as Max competed well and Alec shut the door behind him. In game two we saw Garrett and Dylan do a great job out of the pen, giving our offense a chance to come back and put up a big number. I'm very pleased with
Chase Nye and
Albert Jennings weekend.
Caleb Richter and
Reece Carganilla also provided sparks today."
GAME THREE: Bushnell 1, Eastern Oregon 0
Bushnell earned consecutive shutouts for the first time in program history as they posted a clean sheet in the Saturday morning contest.
Max Chapman and
Alec Gums (2-1) combined on a two-hitter, each giving up just one single in the game.
Bushnell survived a solid start from EOU's Danny Burns (3-4) who went seven innings, striking out seven Beacons and giving up eight hits.
The Beacons scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh. A two-out double by
Reece Carganilla was followed up by an RBI single from
Chase Nye to provide the only offense the Beacons would need.
Albert Jennings (pictured) did everything he could to get the Beacons on the board as well, as the junior went 4-for-4.
GAME TWO: Bushnell 12, Eastern Oregon 6
The Beacons were able to overcome a tough start for the pitching staff, posting their third 15-hit game of the season.
Eastern Oregon scored a run in the first, two in the second, and three in the third as they built a 6-2 lead, roughing up starter
Kai Keamo, who allowed four runs on three hits in the first two innings before coming out in the third.
Garrett Vohs, Bushnell's ace out of the pen, extended his school-record scoreless innings streak to 17.1 as he calmed the storm, going 4-1 innings and scattering three hits with one strike out.
Trailing 6-2, the Beacons posted two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by
Ethan Stacy and took the lead for good in the fourth as Jennings hit a two-run double followed by a
Jordan Wilson RBI single.
Carganilla made it a 9-6 game in the fifth, ripping another double down the left field line that scored a pair of runs. Jennings added some insurance in the seventh as he hit his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot. He finished the game a triple shy of the cycle, and ended the day hitting 7-for-8 with six RBI and three runs.
UP NEXT: Bushnell will hit the road on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Linfield University. They will return to Cascade Conference action in Keiser, Oregon, next weekend as they travel to face Corban University (7-23, 3-16 CCC) for a four-game set.
"Series sweeps in conference play are huge," said Coach Womack, "and we need to keep the momentum going through our last midweek game coming up and going into a very important Corban series."
