Beacons Swept by British Columbia

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The University of British Columbia completed a four-game sweep of the Beacons on Sunday afternoon, taking the CCC finale 6-1 before coming back to win the non-conference tilt, 5-2.

UBC was the first team this season to really take it to the Bushnell pitching staff as the Thunderbirds (7-2, 3-0 CCC) collected 22 hits on the afternoon. Lead-off hitter Kaitlyn Eng set the tone as she went 5-for-7 with four runs batted in.

For the Beacons (5-7, 0-3), Brenna Wilson and Sara Hart collected two hits apiece.

GAME ONE: British Columbia 6, Bushnell 1

Another strong start from Carleen Murray (4-1), allowing one earned run over five, boosted the Thunderbirds to the conference sweep.

Tied 1-1 heading into the third inning, after an RBI single from Marina Castaneda put Bushnell on the board in the second, UBC put together a three-run third on starting pitcher Emily Cole (2-4) behind an Eng single and a two-run double from Jessica Heutink. Eng would later bring in two runs on a triple in the sixth inning.

GAME TWO: British Columbia 4, Bushnell 2

After an RBI double from Violet Richardson tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, a passed ball in the third gave the Beacons their first lead of the week at 2-1. The lead would evaporate in the top of the sixth inning as UBC scored three in the sixth on a trio of run-scoring singles.

Alexis Perez earned her first start of the season for the Beacons and made it a good one, going four strong innings. The freshman scattered five hits but allowed just one unearned run in the no decision, keeping her season ERA at 0.00.

UP NEXT: The Beacons hit the road for Caldwell, Idaho next week as they take on No. 16 The College of Idaho (5-3, 1-2) for a four-game set beginning Friday afternoon. British Columbia heads to Portland to face Warner Pacific (1-9, 0-3).
