Wilson, Nye Walk it Off for Sweep

EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell baseball team posted their third straight double-header sweep on Saturday, claiming a pair of one-run victories in walk-off fashion against Saint Martin's University.

The Beacons (7-1) extended their best start in school history with the wins, which included a game-winning home run from Jordan Wilson in game one and a game-winning single from Chase Nye in the night cap.

"This was a great end to a gritty weekend for the Beacs," said head coach Jamie Womack. "Two walk-off hits in come-from-behind victories are a great momentum boost as we head into conference play. We emptied the bench in game two and everyone was prepared to contribute and do the job they were tasked with. I am proud of the guys for hanging in there and getting it done by any means necessary. We have got a lot to clean up this week, but we are excited for the challenge in front of us."

GAME ONE: BUSHNELL 13, SAINT MARTIN'S 12

After a string of successful days on the mound, it was the Beacon offense's turn to step it up on Saturday morning. Some early fire power, including a grand slam from Dylan Carson, had Bushnell leading 10-4 heading into the eighth inning.

The Saints, however, were able to claw their way back into the game, scoring four in the eighth and four in the ninth, taking a 12-10 lead into the bottom of the ninth to move to within three outs of their first win of the season.

Friday's hero Reece Carganilla got the ball rolling with a lead off single, and pinch runner Dylan Ha came in to score on a double from Nate Stevens as the Beacons pulled to within one run and setting up Wilson for what would be his 26th career homer and the game clincher.

The Beacons finished the game with 14 hits, led by a 3-for-4 day from Carson who scored three times, had four RBI, and was just a double short of the cycle as he hit his first career triple in the third inning. CJ Smith and Kolby Amaral added two hits apiece and Ethan Stacy hit his first home run of the season as part of a three-run seventh.

Bushnell went through five pitchers in the game, giving up 18 hits as starter Max Chapman gave up four runs on six hits over four innings of work. Jacob Wood threw a solid three innings out of the pen, giving up just two hits. Jayden Soriano (1-0) came in for Bushnell to stem the tide in the ninth and finished with 0.2 innings of work without allowing a hit.

Saint Martin's went through four pitchers of their own after starter Aaron Nease was pulled in the third after giving up five earned runs on six hits. It was leadoff hitter Peter Hollabaugh, however, who came in for the final 1.1 innings and took the loos, allowing three runs on Bushnell's final four hits.

GAME TWO: BUSHNELL 8, SAINT MARTIN'S 7 (8 Innings)

After SMU's rally in the opener, it was Bushnell's turn to come back in the night cap. The Beacons trailed 7-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning the scheduled seven-inning contest. With two runners on, Stacy hit an RBI single to make it a two-run game and the next batter was senior Jamison Hussey who smashed a two-out double off the right center field wall, scoring a pair to make it 7-7.

The game went to extras, where Blake Stavros put the Saints down in order, bringing up Bushnell for the bottom of the eighth. It didn't take long for Bushnell to claim their fourth-straight one-run victory as Amaral led off the frame with a triple to center field and Nye followed with his game-winning single through the right side.

Nye, who was a substitution in the top of the first inning after a collision in shallow left field, ended the game batting 4-for-4. Stacy added two hits as did Will Hudler.

Blake Stavros (1-0) claimed the victory in relief, striking out three batters over the final two innings and giving up just one unearned run.

UP NEXT: Bushnell moves into Cascade Collegiate Conference action next weekend, remaining at home for their toughest test thus far against Oregon Tech (5-2) in a three-game series, starting Friday at 2:00 pm.
