PHOENIX, Ariz. – For
Violet Richardson and the Beacons it was a record-setting start to their Arizona road trip on Thursday afternoon as they swept Nelson University, 11-1 and 10-7.
Â
Richardson hit two home runs in game two, including a grand slam, as she tied the Bushnell single-game record with seven runs batted in. The record is also held by Hall of Famer Brooke Davis, who set the mark 16 years ago.
Â
For the Beacons, another major record came in the first game as they scored all 11 of their runs in the fourth inning, the most runs in a single-inning in school history. Â
Â
Bushnell combined for 16 hits on the day, picking up eight in each game.
Marina Castaneda led everyone with four hits,
Sara Martin and Richardson each had three, and
Ashlyn Martin earned a pair of doubles and four RBI.
Â
GAME ONE: Bushnell 11, Nelson 1 (5 Innings)
Â
Emily Cole (1-1) pitched another incredible game for the Beacons in the opener, striking out five batters and giving up just one earned run to pick up the victory. Bushnell didn't allow a single runner to get past first base until the bottom of the fifth, and Cole got plenty of run support as the Beacons broke things open in the fourth, taking advantage of a miscue that resulted in all 11 runs being unearned. Â
Â
Riley Peeler led off the big inning with a double and the Beacons quickly loaded the bases.
Marina Castaneda brought home two on an RBI single, and capped off the frame with a three-run home run. In all, the Beacons posted seven hits in the inning.
Â
Castaneda finished the game hitting 3-for-3 with five RBI, only for Richardson to overshadow those efforts in game two.
Â
GAME TWO: Bushnell 10, Nelson 7
Â
Richardson, who ended the game hitting 3-for-3 and reaching base four times, broke open game two with her Grand Slam coming in the top of the third inning to make it a 5-0 game. Her three-run shot capped off a five-run fourth inning as the visitors held a 10-0 lead.
Â
The Beacons were closing in on another five-inning run-rule victory in the second game, but the Warriors were able to post four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back errors.
Â
Sara Martin (2-0) went the distance for the Beacons and finished the game allowing just five hits and no earned runs.
