PORTLAND, Ore.  – The Bushnell men's basketball team played some of their best basketball of the season in Portland this weekend, but came away with two losses after falling to the Multnomah Campus of Jessup University in overtime on Saturday evening, 86-84.
Â
Noah McCord's driving layup at the buzzer put the game away, giving the Lions their first-ever season sweep of the Beacons in their final regular season games. MCJU will close after this spring semester.
Â
The Lions (12-7, 8-6 CCC) shot 42% in the game and were just 4-for-29 from three-point range, but powered their way to a 60-34 margin on points in the paint to prevail. The Beacons (9-11, 5-9) hit 47% from the floor and were better beyond the arc where the shot 50% (12-24).
Â
The Beacons nearly had the victory in regulation after
Kaleb Burnett hit a three-pointer with four seconds remaining to give Bushnell a 74-71 lead. The home team, however, would not be denied as Keilan Torkornoo threw up a desperation off-balance heave as the clock expired, somehow finding it's way into the net.
Â
Squeeky Johnson had another impressive night for the Beacons, leading all scorers with 30 points as he shot 6-for-9 from three-point range. Burnett added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds while
Luke Smith and
Christian Pitcher collected 12 points apiece.
Â
McCord led the Lions, finishing his night with 21 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Torkornoo finished with 16 points and was just 1-for-5 from three-point range, hitting only his regulation buzzer-beater.
Â
The Beacons will need to lick their wounds quickly as a tough test awaits at home on Friday night when they welcome No. 4-ranked College of Idaho (18-2, 13-1) into the Morse Center. The Yotes bring with them an eight-game winning streak.
