SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Master's University took the season opener, 3-1, over the visiting Bushnell University women's soccer team on Thursday afternoon.
Head Coach Halle Meadows said, "Good first game from the players. We had a lot of new pieces and for only playing together a week, they did well. A few players stepped up that really impressed us and we experimented with a few new things so we are excited to see how the next few games go. And Ruby got a banger!"
The Mustangs (1-0) finished with a 24-4 advantage in shots, putting 10 on frame. TMU struck first in the 20th minute of play and brought the one-goal lead into the break. A quick goal less than a minute into the second half extended the score to 2-0 before the Mustangs found the net a final time in the 79th minute.
Bushnell (0-1) answered in the 81st-minute with an unassisted goal from Ruby Daniels. Daniels took advantage of a Mustang miscue, stealing the ball from a defender before sending in a deep shot from outside the box.
Daniels said, "It was our first game of the season with new and familiar faces. After getting scored on in the first half, we wanted to go into the second half with a strong mentality and we succeeded in that, resulting in our first goal of the season. I attribute my goal to us being defensively sound and pressing together."
Lexis Canyete-Asato added, "Although it wasn't the results we wanted, considering it was our first game together and the blazing heat, we did really well competing against this team. There were so many girls that stepped up today and I'm excited to see how this momentum carries into the season."
Daniels, Myla Chow and Jasmine Seago each recorded a shot on goal for the Beacons. Lexi Bates finished with seven saves.
Up next, the Beacons continue their California road trip, taking on Soka University of America on Aug. 17 at 5:00 p.m.
