Bushnell Drops Two at UBC

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The University of British Columbia took both games over the visiting Bushnell University baseball team on Saturday, sweeping the Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader 8-1 and 6-3.

The Thunderbirds (24-13, 9-5 CCC) quieted the Bushnell bats, holding the Beacons (19-16, 6-4) to 10 hits on the day. The doubleheader sweep moves British Columbia into third in the CCC standings, while Bushnell falls to fourth.

Game One: British Columbia 8, Bushnell 1

The Thunderbirds scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth on their way to a game one victory. Sean Heppner (4-1) threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, and added five strikeouts to his CCC-leading total.

The score was tied at 0-0 until the six-run inning, a frame that saw four consecutive run-scoring singles. British Columbia added two more in the bottom of the seventh to make it an 8-1 final score.

The Bushnell run was scored in the top of the fifth as Caleb Richter crossed home on a wild pitch. Kai Keamo got the start on the mound for the Beacons, giving up six runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Game Two: British Columbia 6, Bushnell 3

The Beacons struck first in game two on a sacrifice fly from Chase Nye, scoring Albert Jennings for the 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Cade Crist extended the Bushnell lead to 3-0 in the third with a two-run double down the left field line.

The Thunderbirds held the Beacons scoreless the rest of the way, picking up a run in the bottom of the third before putting up five runs in the fifth. The big inning was capped off with a two-run homer off the bat of David Draayers.

Evan Hoegler (2-0) got the win for the Thunderbirds, holding the Beacons hitless through the final 4.1 innings. Hoegler faced the minimum in the outing and tallied four strikeouts.

Nate Rasmussen took the loss on the mound for Bushnell, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. Daniel Furman finished off the game, giving up just one hit in 3.1 innings.
