Hoffman Goes for 30/20 as Beacons Win Again

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Bushnell men's basketball team nearly crossed the century mark again on Saturday night, cruising to a 97-81 victory over The Evergreen State College on the back of 11 three-pointers and a 30-point, 21-rebound performance from Senior Spencer Hoffman.

The Beacons (13-9, 10-6 CCC) shot 50% from the field and hit 11 three-pointers, using a 51-23 rebounding margin to knock off the Geoducks (3-18, 2-14), Bushnell's 21 offensive rebounds led to a 17-2 advantage in second-chance scoring.

Evergreen hit 14 threes of their own and couldn't miss early one, holding their own with the visitors for the first 17 minutes of the game. Bushnell held a slim 42-39 advantage with 3:44 remaining in the first half but closed on a 12-3 run. The Beacons came out of the break on fire, using a 14-2 run to go up by 23 and put the game out of reach.

Head Coach Eddie Alexander said, "Evergreen came out red hot, hitting all of their threes, regardless of how well we contested them. I wasn't happy with our defensive execution, but we rode the wave and stayed poised, and were able to stretch a small lead. We had a tough conversation at halftime and came out and immediately executed on both ends of the court. I am proud of how we responded."

For as much as the deep threat helped Bushnell throughout the night, it was once again the inside dominance of Hoffman that put the game away. Hoffman nearly had complete double-doubles in each half, posting 16 points and nine rebounds over the first 20 minutes along with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the final frame. It was the second 30/20 game in school history and first in six years. The 21 rebounds were a career-high and just two shy of the Beacon single-game record.

"Spencer was a beast again tonight," said Alexander. "He executed offensively, rebounded everything, and led us verbally on the defensive end in the second half."

Hoffman said, "It is always tough to win on the road in this conference and I am proud of how we found ways to get it done this weekend. Out best basketball is still ahead of us but it feels like we are moving closer and closer to it with each performance."

Hoffman was just one of five Beacons to score in double-digits as all five starters scored at least ten. Trevon Richmond scored 12 points, all within the first eight minutes of the game and all on three-pointers. Alexis Angeles also scored 12, posting ten in the second half.

Kaden Sand added 11 points along with five rebounds, five assists, and three steals while Stevie Schlabach contributed ten points, seven rebounds, and a team-high six assists. Coming in off the bench, Cory Johnson and Luke Smith combined for 17 points and five three-pointers.

Evergreen was led by 20 points from Elijah McLaughlin, hitting 6-for-10 from beyond the arch. Daniel Thomas hit three treys to finish with 11 and Jayden Upshaw scored eight points with a game-high seven assists. No Geoduck player had more than four rebounds and no starter posted more than two.

The Beacons return home next weekend and will have a big test on their hands Friday night when they tip off against Lewis-Clark State College (16-6, 14-2) at 2:00 pm.
