EUGENE, Ore. – After 11 lead changes and eight ties, the Southern Oregon University men's basketball team closed out Bushnell on an 11-1 run, holding the Beacons without a field goal for the final six minutes of contest to claim a 71-64 victory.
The Beacons had taken a 39-33 lead into the intermission but quickly saw it disappear in the second half as the Raiders scored the first 12 points of the second half to take a six-point lead of their own.
Bushnell clawed their way back again and swung the momentum the other direction with a 15-1 run of their own, capped off by four straight free-throws from
Cory Johnson after a technical foul. This gave the home team an eight-point lead, 54-46 with just under ten minutes to play, but the Raiders weren't done.
Another SOU spurt led to another lead change, before Bushnell emerged with a three-point advantage, 61-58 on a three-pointer from
Squeeky Johnson with 5:55 remaining. That would be the final field goal for the Beacons, however, as they went cold from the field, missing their next six attempts along with multiple missed free-throws.
Southern came out of the final Bushnell attempt with a five point lead and ten seconds remaining, claiming the seven-point victory after an uncontested dunk at the buzzer by Elijah Jackson.
Bushnell (5-6, 1-4) shot 37% in the game and earned a 15-11 advantage in bench scoring.
Cory Johnson ended the night with 21 points to lead all players, and tied
Ashton Harvey for the team lead in rebounds with nine. Harvey added 17 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the field.
Isaiah Wallace came off the bench to score ten points, hitting a game-high three three-pointers.
Southern Oregon (6-5, 1-4) had four of their five starters score in double-digits, led by 15 points apiece from Jackson and Etan Collins. Bryce Dyer had an incredible game down low for the Raiders, scoring 14 points and adding a season-high 17 rebounds. Nine of his rebounds came on the offensive end, part of a 47-35 rebounding advantage for SOU that amounted to a 14-5 edge in second-chance scoring.
The Beacons will take nine days off for Christmas before returning to action on December 30 when they will play host to Corban University (6-5, 4-1) in Cascade Conference action at 7:30 pm.
