Defense Lifts Beacons to Victory

PORTLAND, Ore.  – A first-half goal from senior Emily Puita, and a stalwart defensive effort led the Bushnell women's soccer team to their second straight shutout victory on Saturday, defeating Multnomah Campus of Jessup University, 1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

The Beacons (5-10, 3-6 CCC) held the Lions (5-6-4, 3-4-2) to just one shot-on-goal, which they didn't collect until the 59th minute, and finished with an 11-6 advantage in shot attempts. Lexi Bates needed to make just the one save to record her second straight shutout victory between the pipes, and fifth of her career.

Head Coach Halle Meadows said, "It wasn't as pretty of a game as yesterday, but they did their job today. Lola Rebuck was our MVP. Her and Lexi were both huge this weekend."

After assisting on Friday's game-winner, Puita scored the game-winner in the 24th minute, intercepting an errant clearance pass by the Lions defense, and firing a 20-yard strike into the lower left of the goal. It was the senior's 11th career goal, moving her into a tie for fifth-place on Bushnell's all-time scoring list.

With six points on the weekend, Bushnell has moved up from 13th to tenth in the CCC standings and sit just two points behind MCJU for eighth-place.

"It was a great weekend for the Beacs," said Meadows. "We had a really hard week of practice, focusing on intensity and mindset and it paid off with these games in Portland. Now we get back to work on Monday for a hard battle ahead."

The Beacons return home for their final three conference games, beginning next Friday at 12:00 pm against No. 12-ranked College of Idaho (10-0-2, 8-0).
