KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Bushnell women's soccer team struck first, but Northwest University came back to win a Cascade Collegiate Conference clash on Friday afternoon, 2-1.
Bushnell (3-9, 1-5 CCC) had one of their better outings of the season, trailing just 7-5 in shots-on-goal, and were able to avoid the mistakes that had recently plagued them, giving up two top-shelf goals to the Eagles (3-1-3, 2-1-3 CCC).
Head Coach
Halle Meadows said, "We came out and got a great goal and did some really good things. A dumb foul by us got them the free kick for the equalizer and we were never able to regain momentum. We lost a player to an injury and
Lola Rebuck really stepped up for us today."
The Beacons got the scoring underway in the 18th minute as
Lanaeya Botelho (pictured) took a pass from
Lorelai Murphy, turner her defender around and struck quickly from just outside the 18 to put the visitors on top, 1-0.
NU answered in the 40th minute on a Talia Hurst free-kick that sailed into the upper-left corner of the net.
Bushnell was looking to force at least a tie with the Eagles for the first time since 2007 but Northwest put that hope to bed in the 84th minute on a deep strike from Laura Rice, who collected a loose ball and buried it into the right corner of the net for the game-winner.
The Saints held a 23-4 lead in shots, with
Ashley Flores coming up with the only shot-on-goal for the visitors.
The Beacons continue remain in Portland on Saturday where they take on Evergreen (0-6-3, 0-4-2) on Saturday at 12:30 pm.
