EUGENE, Ore. – After rallying to tie the game with seven seconds to play, Bushnell saw a rivalry game slip through their hands as Corban drove the court for a last-second layup and an 81-79 victory in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
Â
The win moved Corban to 7-5 in CCC action (10-7 overall) as the second half of the circuit gets underway and gave the visitors a season sweep over the Beacons in what could become a decisive tiebreaker for post-season positioning. The Beacons fall to 9-8 on the season, 6-6 in conference.
Â
Corban had maintained control throughout most of the contest after taking an 11-point lead at halftime, 52-41. The Bushnell defense buckled down in the second half but try as they might, struggled to get over the hump and bring the game any closer than a seven-point deficit.
Â
With 2:46 remaining, Jared Franklin landed an off-balance five-foot jumper to give the visitors a 77-68 advantage, but the Beacons found one more run in them. Fueled by pair of Corban turnovers, Bushnell pieced together an 8-0 run, capped off by a
Kaden Sand layup with 23 seconds remaining to climb within 77-76.
Â
After Corban hit a pair of free-throws to make it a three-point game, the Beacons found themselves in position to go for the tie when senior
Stevie Schlabach was fouled as he attempted a three-pointer with seven seconds to go.
Â
The senior knocked down all three free-throws and the Beacons were tied for the first time in 28 minutes, 79-79. Â
Â
Neither team had a timeout remaining, and the Warriors took advantage, handing the ball off to senior Taylor Anderson who drove all the way to the hoop and laid in the game winner. A buzzer-beating attempt for the Beacons fell short to end the contest.
Â
Anderson finished the game with 22 points for the Warriors to lead all scorers. After an 18-point first half, he had been held to just a single field goal over the final 20 minutes, until the game-winner. Corban had four players in double-figures with Jay Wilson adding 17, Reece Van Lierop scoring 11 and Collin Warmouth posting 10.
Â
The Warriors shot 55% in the game with their only scoring advantage coming on points-in-the-paint where the final layup gave them a 36-34 edge.
Â
Bushnell shot 36%, and led in points off turnovers (16-14), second-chance points (17-5), and bench scoring (23-21). The Beacons out-rebounded the Warriors 41-33 including 17 offensive boards.
Â
Five players ended the night in double-figures for the Beacons, led by 17 from
Kaden Sand (pictured) who added team highs with four assists and two steals. The top free-throw shooting team in the conference went 26-for-29 in the game, including perfect 7-for-7 performances from Schlabach and
Alexis Angeles who scored 14 points apiece.
Luke Smith and
Cory Johnson combined for 21 off the bench.
Spencer Hoffman scored eight points and led all players with 13 rebounds.
Â
Bushnell will look to rebound quickly, playing host to Multnomah University on Friday at 7:30 pm.
