Chow, Taylor-Hughes Lift Beacons to First Win

PORTLAND, Ore.  – Defender Myla Chow recorded the game-winning goal in the final minute of play as the visiting Bushnell University women's soccer team took down Lewis & Clark College, 2-1, to record their first win of the season.

Emily Puita drew a foul just past midfield to get the game-clinching sequence started, stopping the clock with 55 seconds to go. Niamhie Taylor-Hughes took the deep free kick, giving the Beacons an opportunity. A shot by Ruby Daniels was saved but Chow sent in the rebound.

First-year Head Coach Halle Meadows records the first win of her coaching campaign, taking just two games to do so, as the Beacons move to 1-1 on the young season.

"We had a really good first half," said Meadows. "We had some good opportunities in front of goal that we couldn't finish but we possessed the ball very well. The second half was a little more gritty. They started playing a bit more direct and we fell into that trap but in the last 20 minutes we started getting a lot of opportunities and Myla finalized it for us in that last minute. It was a good team win."

L&C survived a pair of opportunities by the Beacons less than 10 minutes into the second period, which included a header save by a Pio defender. Elle Sparks knocked in the first goal of the game for the Pios shortly after.

Taylor-Hughes scored the first goal of the season for the Beacons in style, collecting a pass from Sara Hart before taking a sliding shot to make it a 1-1 score in the 70th minute. Chow followed with a goal to remember in the final minute of play to secure the 2-1 victory for Bushnell.

The Beacons finished with a 10-9 edge in shots. Taylor-Hughes led the team with five shots, while Lexi Bates recorded four saves.

Up next, Bushnell takes on George Fox on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m.
