UBC Sweeps CCC Series

VANCOUVER, B.C. –  The visiting Bushnell University baseball team was swept in a series for the first time this season as the University of British Columbia won both games of Saturday's Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader in run rule fashion.

The Thunderbirds (25-15, 11-5 CCC) recorded 32 hits on the day. Bushnell drops to 19-15 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

Game 1: British Columbia 11, Bushnell 0 (7 innings)

The Thunderbirds led 8-0 through two innings to cruise to a game three win, holding the Beacons to four hits. Daniel Orfaly (3-0) threw six innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts before Adam Khan pitched a one-hit seventh.

Aaron Marsh and Mike Fitzsimmons posted three hits apiece. David Draayers went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run triple in the first.

Ethan Paulson (1-3) got the start for the Beacons, allowing four runs on three hits. Trevor Hammond entered in the second and went four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Caleb Watson pitched the sixth, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits.

Bushnell had an uncharacteristic four fielding errors on the game.

Game 2: British Columbia 14, Bushnell 4 (8 innings)

UBC scored in all but one inning in the 20-hit game four victory. It was a close contest through four and a half innings before the Beacons gave up a six-run bottom of the fifth and were unable to recover.

Bushnell scored its first run of the day on an Ethan Stacy leadoff home run but UBC answered with two runs in the bottom half to go up 2-1.

The Beacons took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth, starting with a run on a double steal. Liam Kerr followed it up with a two-run shot to right center, his second homer of the series. Caleb Richter kept the bats going with his first career hit, a triple to right center, before the Thunderbirds got out of the inning.

British Columbia answered with a six-run bottom of the fifth, all with two outs, to make it a 10-4 score. It was all UBC the rest of the way as the Thunderbirds earned the run-rule walk-off on a Draayers sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.

Ryan Heppner pitched four innings for the Thunderbirds, allowing four runs on five hits. Daniel Sereda gave up just one hit through the next three innings before Brendan Logan threw a one-hit eighth.

Trent Lenihan and Kyle Anderson both recorded a four-hit game. Lenihan drove in four runs, while Fitzsimmons brought in three.

Adam Sabatino (3-2) got the start for the Beacons, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Stacy and Jordan Wilson finished with two hits apiece.

Up Next: Bushnell hosts a mid-week game against Western Oregon University on Tuesday before welcoming Oregon Tech to the Hamlin Sports Complex for the second time this season on Friday and Saturday.
