SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A late comeback fell short as Western Oregon University came away with a 6-5 win over Bushnell University in Tuesday evening's non-conference baseball game at the Hamlin Sports Complex.
Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth,
Jeff Fripp lifted a three-run shot over the right center fence to pull the Beacons within one. The Wolves retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.
Noah Montoya reached on a single up the middle in the ninth and got into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by
Jameson Hussey. Western Oregon's Levi Cummings made a diving catch in center field to record the final out and prevent the game-tying run.
Hussey went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Fripp finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
Jaxson Fraser hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, his first collegiate homer.
Caleb Watson (2 IP),
Trenton Hough (1 IP) and
Colby Knutzen (1 IP) pitched scoreless innings for the Beacons. Yuzo Ishioka (2-0) recorded the win for WOU, allowing one run on three hits in three innings of work.
Up Next: Bushnell (19-16, 7-5 CCC) hosts Oregon Tech (25-13, 12-4) in a Cascade Collegiate Conference series on April 14-15.
